Off course I should provide a link of this track which is, IMHO one of the best songs ever made:

Ah...the good 'ol days! Smile

I worked in an alternative clothing store from 1988 to 1990. Music was a big part of our atmosphere, and we played everyone you mentioned. I remember everyone being excited when Kraftwerk were in town. I miss all of the awesome rock posters we carried, too.

I remember telling Gideon that the 'Hair Cutting Fiasco' on Monday did have one saving grace: the Haircut Store was playing Siouxsie. Laughing

Smile

I could play Siouxsie all day...
When you're getting older you tend to look backwards and that's a good way to decide what songs still are OK after all these years......

So here's another vid of a tune that's still doing it for me after all these years....

ah yes - the Cure had soooo many excellent tunes. Smith sure made some great guitar parts for those songs.

I drove my parents CRAZY with my dyed-black-ratted-hairsprayed-Robert-Smith-hair. I loved it! rocking

I don't know how I would have gotten through high school without The Cure, The Smiths, Yaz, Roxy Music, Siouxsie, Depeche Mode, Japan (anyone ever hear 'Tim Drum'?), This Mortal Coil, Joy Division, and on and on...

...I was a lonely youth.

no - haven't - what's cool about it? I was more into Depeche Mode those teen years. I had loads of 12" from them.

Almost (partly) exactly the same music I listened too back then...

And yes, I do know Tin Drum, have a copy over here, but haven't heard it for years I must admit...

Here's some of the artists / albums / tunes that inspired me (not necessarily in this order):

Electronica:
Orbital -- In Sides (U.K. release, both CDs)

Non-Electronica:
Miami Sound Machine -- Primitive Love
The B52s -- Cosmic Thing (the album)
ZZ Top -- Waitin for the Bus, Precious and Grace, others
The Cars -- self titled album (plus a couple others)
The Police -- Synchronicity (album and song)
Beck -- Odelay (particularly Devil's Haircut)
David Bowie -- Let's Dance, Ashes to Ashes, others (but particularly those two)
Madonna -- Vogue, others

As you can see, I've been exposed pretty much to just plain old pop music... that's what my parents listened to, and I never got to shop at a record store which sold electronica (because Potlatch, town of 900, doesn't have one). But these songs really shine.

I also listened to Chemical Bros. and The Crystal Method, but while I liked their songs, none of them really inspired me the way Orbital's In Sides (UK release) did. I remember listening to the whole album, both CDs, start to finish, then starting over again, and again and again. I couldn't get over how beautiful it was!
This life is a joke, and nobody's laughing.

Neotone:

You should check out the early (80's) recordings of peeps like Coil, clockDVA, Alien Sex Fiend and Severed Heads. The vocal work is expecially of note. I think you'll be pleaseantly surprised and quite possibly hooked.

This is so "my" song, for so many different reasons.

I think this song also taught me my love of strong melody and harmony. I heard it at an impressionable age and very thankful for that Very Happy

Also, not exactly oldschool but Orbus Terrarum is still one of my favourite albums and I don't even 'listen' to 'ambient' 'music' anymore Laughing

Ah, yes!

The B-52's...especially the first album with the classic 'Rock Lobster' !
And Bowie, I especially like his older singles (pre-'Let's' Dance...), the albums I didn't really like...

Dammit, I so want to guess, but you leave your birth year out of your profile, so I'm unsure about when you got into the aforementioned.

Me, Siouxsie's The Scream became a favorite right away, and ever since. About that time, I was digesting Patti Smith's second album and Television's first. Then came the Pretenders, the Clash's London Calling, Joe Jackson's first two, Wall of Voodoo, Laurie Anderson ...

Although I bought each Siouxsie album as it came out after that, I didn't get into their later stuff that much until Through the Looking Glass, which I'd often put on shuffle play along with Tori Amos' Strange Little Girls. Since then, I've gone back to the middle releases with a greater appetite.

Didn't leave it out on purpose though!

The Siouxsie-thing started a bit later on for me: I think it was with 'Kaleidoscope' (not sure anymore), I heard earlier music before, but I think these tunes somehow didn't work for me at first....

Television is unknown to me (sorry!), Joe Jackson too poppy for me, Wall of Voodoo does ring a bell, but I can't remember 1 single song...I'll have to do a bit of investigating.
I really loved (still do) 'Dancing Barefoot' and 'Because The Night', but I'm not really familiar with Patti's other work....
Lauri Anderson, really liked some of her work, but haven't really listened to her the last couple of years, not really sure it still would have the same impact on me now as hearing 'O Superman' for the first time many years ago.....

Years back I wrote up a list of what artists I felt had some influence on my music. Hmm - it would be fun to turn it into a list of videos at some time Smile

As you can see, something happened in 1985 and I began to move out of the 80's music and into jam music, mostly Rock - some Jazz. Then a decade later - another shift happened, and I found electronic music and loving it ever since Smile

Artist/Group   Year
=================
1983    B-52's
1983   Thomas Dolby
1983   Tears For Fears
1983    Talking Heads
1984   Depeche Mode
1984    U2
1985   Pink Floyd
1985   Red Hot Chili Peppers
1986   Led Zeppelin
1987   Grateful Dead
1987   Kitaro
1987   Igor Stravinski
1987   Michael Hedges
1987   Mahavishnu Orchestra
1987   John McLaughlin
1988   Beatles
1989   John Coltrane
1989   Miles Davis
1991   Phish
1993   Peter Gabriel
1994   Herbie Hancock
1995   MC 900ft Jesus
1995   Ambient music
1996   Acid Jazz music
1997   Higher Intelligence Agency
1997   Drum 'N' Bass Music
1997   Trip Hop Music
1997   Spacetime Continuum
1998   Goldie
1998   DJ Shadow
1998   DJ Spooky
1998   Roni Size/Repreznat
1998   Squarepusher
1999   Wagon Christ
1999   u-ziq
1999   ORB
2000   Future Sound of London
2001   Flanger/Sr. Coconut/Atom Heart
2002   Shpongle

And after 2002, it's been fewer artists - but I'm sure I could figure out some more. Dub music should be there at around 2005/6.

As far as lyrics go, Horses, Patti Smith's first album, was the scariest fucking thing we (college-aged kids) had ever heard. It hit me like Coltrane's Meditations did. The tracks you mention are much later, and "poppy."

I don't know if there could be a Cure without Television. (Their albums Marquee Moon and Adventure, as well as the players' solo albums are the good stuff -- ie: Their eponymous reunion album just doesn't have the magic.)

The reason I specify Joe Jackson's first two is that he worked with guitar-bass-drums plus his vocals, piano and melodica. So he was using his arrangement talents on a basic rock band. Also, who can resist lyrics like: Mother doesn't go out any more / She just sits at home and rolls her spastic eyes? The bassist on these was Graham Maby, who later played with TMBG.
