Leonid meteor shower this weekend. don't know if Kylo's clouds will cooperate, but this corner of the planet apparently isn't the best seat this time around anyway. however, the sonic alternative is to listen to it even if you can't see it. the Roswell Astronomy Club (yes, that Roswell) is running live broadcasts of meteor bursts here; http://www.roswellastronomyclub.com/radio_meteors.htm

warning; it's pretty boring - sounds like endless static with the occasional echoy 'ping' - unless you think it's cool to begin with. I found that you can eq most of the background static out.

My parent's were always dragging us out of bed in the middle of the night to drive up to the mountains and watch meteor showers. I still get the biggest kick out of it. We probably won't see too many out this way, but I'm still going to give it a go in the wee hours. Cool, right on.

Still covered up. Sad My cousin & I went to a star party last night with a bunch of people at a science meusem but it led to everyone just telling each other about themselves and showing their scopes. Some impressive 18 inch reflectors were present but the entertainment was easily shot when a few guys kept rattling on about 'aperature fever' and what kind of scope is right for you; what focal lengths there are (as there are many) and achromatic & apochromatic scopes etc... These guys were into their 'birding' and discussing about what's better for them I'll put it that way.

My cousin got up and left to look at the meusem like 15 minutes into it. Laughing
I stayed, but I should've went too, but I wanted to seem like I cared. I noticed other people around the room were putting their hands on their foreheads.

Then we went home, but there was a tiny hole in the sky and I got a small look but I didn't see anything. WTF?

yeah, lotsa clouds here too. that's why I thought I'd try the 'close my eyes & listen to the pings' method. besides the hellacious wind we've been having would probably blow them all up north Laughing probably a fair trade for all the beautiful 'northern' lights we're not supposed to get down here.

looking forward to your star shots when these clouds clear off (May? June? Cool )

yeah that's about right it seems. Actually southern oregon gets lucky when it comes to clears skies a lot- especially around the Klamath region. If I wanted to, I could drive up to the top of Mt. Ashland and get above the stratus layer hopefully, but it's still pretty thick.
