Feeling limited by Cubase
Created on: 11/18/06 09:21 AM Replies: 11

I'm thinking of switching to Logic, or at least trying to get the latest Cubase if it's in any way more flexible.

I'm finding myself needing more and more control and finding the Cubase way a little inhibiting. Maybe it's just a phase. Some of the things I want more control on are:

DSP pathing
Sound architecture and layers of moving parameters
Range of effects available
Timing and quantizing
Tunings (12tET is starting to sound a bit lifeless so I'm interested in Just Intonation and other subtle adjustments and even freaky tunings like 16tET)

Any thoughts on what Logic is like for making intricate drill'n'bass etc would be appreciated, or any other good sequencers for that matter.

I've also been wondering about Reaktor. The idea of building my own instruments and environments is very appealing because often I get ideas that I can't do with my softsynths and it will also be challenging and I feel I need that!

Get Logic. Smile

and a MAC, if you don't already have one....Logic for Windows isn't supported anymore....which is, in my opinion, not so clever....

My room mate switched from Cubase to Logic, but then from Logic to ProTools, but he is almost strictly just a recording guy, and for anyone who writes and uses synths, Logic is the way. I use Cubase mostly, but i really am not that into it. Also have you tried Live? I did a little collaboration with a friend, and he had some pretty wicked effects in Live. It's not the best tracking program IMHO, but I think creatively it helps the juices flow. I downloaded the demo and have been tinkering with it. Pretty cool. Anyways, thats my two sense, as i too am trying to ditch Cubase.

My next step is going to be to buy a registration for Audiomulch, and see if that opens up any avenues for me. In the past I have used it for weird sound design but now I'm thinking of using it to make my glitchy FX and perhaps see if it's inclined towards breakbeat science super freak

I also bought Renoise a while ago and they have an update. I started on trackers but I find it a bit hard to get back into them. I may just force myself to try and finish something - anything, on that. It really is the best tracker I've seen, I love the sound of it's built in filters and you can use and control any parameter in any of your plugin effects by pulling up a graph or several graphs for each track.

Audiomulch is great. if you're going to spend some real money in your quest, these folks rave about Reaktor being the best of both worlds; http://reaktions.com/music/music.htm

if you're feeling limited than the best thing to do might be bust everything wide open and re-enter from another direction completely. I don't use dedicated sequencers, but I know that the theory is probably the same throughout the lot of cubase, sonar, logic, protools...they all basically do the same thing at the heart of it, no?

from the comfort of my couch, peering into another man's dillema, I'd say listen to yer gut and try something very new to you. it's not like you can't return from where you came, you'll probably return with new skills, sounds, and perspective.

I've heard good things about audiomulch and renoise, but I've never used either. Of course I'd recommend Reaktor or Max/MSP, but neither one is going to give you instant gratification.

perhaps now is a good time to start playing the tuba? no, please don't. would miss your filter sweeps.

Well I already tried my hand at piano composition ;)

Interesting points there Doof... I think the way to go here is to force myself to use Renoise and Mulch and finish a few tracks. Last time I tried I wimped out. I had to learn a bunch of new stuff.

One thing that's wicky wicked about Renoise is the sample start point command (which can be issued on any note-on) is tempo-synched. So not only can you do beat juggling without cutting up your samples, but you can go anywhere between chopping and mad granular insanity (provided your base tempo is high enough!).

I'm really excited about this...

Michael, when I attain rock-star status I might be able to afford to go the NI route. I do love their products but they are insanely priced Crying or Very sad

I have always thought Logic was overrated. Never liked the interface. First I used Cubase, then I switched to Logic for a year but I couldn't bear it and switched back. I really thought I gave that app a chance.

Cubase 4 ROCKS (although there are some minor bugs).

But then again, that's my opinion.

Smile Cool, right on.

RE: too expensive - there's a sealed copy of Reaktor 5 on ebay right now with a "buy it now" price of $150. there are a couple of copies of Reaktor 4 up there for under $100. If you poke around, you can find some deals out there.
