I'm a Dexter fan. After watching Dexter; all four seasons, nothing compares...
The first season is the BEST!!!

Since we don't watch any tv, it's hard for me to compare shows, but we do rent dvd's off of Netflix...so...let me see...
IMO, Best Police show? No idea...
IMO, Best Western? F*CKING DEADWOOD!!!!! (never underestimate the power of a well-placed 'Cock Sucker' comment)
IMO, my favorite author is Mitchner
And Kylo, I've tried to watch Dexter, because I loved him in 6 Feet Under (THAT show totally rocked!!!) but my delicate eyes (much more sensitive than my ears) could not take the blood. I made it through about 2 minutes. Should I try again?
BTW, Sub, my birthday is in September....any way I could score one of those ceramic cats?!

Man....I'm gonna be forty....big FOUR - OH! Yep, yep, yep....I think a ceramic cat just might help me get through this milestone.
BTW, Kylo...I just added Season 1 of Dexter to our Netfliz queue. I'm willing to give it another try if you think so highly of it.

re "Deadwood"
Yeah, Deadwood did rock righteously. The problem is, it JUST ENDS. Except maybe for Carnivale, I've never been as disappointed with HBO for just ending a show with no closure. But, yeah. My fave scene is when the sheriff & Swearengen finally decide to duke it out and take off their guns and ascertain they have no knives and kick each others' asses across the room and out on to the balcony and OVER the balcony and into the muck and the mud and they're punchin' and kickin' and Al gets on top and says:
"It just come to me! I DO got a knife!"
and he whips it out and he's about to slit Bullock's throat just then the stagecoach rolls in and all the passengers including Bullock's kid are wide eyed and slack jawed and Al looks up and says:
"Welcome to Deadwood!"
lol btw Bullock now plays pretty much the same sheriff only in modern times in 'Justified'. Pretty cool. Dialog mostly nifty one-liners instead of the extended Shakespearean awesomeness of Deadwood, and as a bonus it features the inspired Walton Goggins, who was GREAT as Shane in The Shield, and Swearengen's right hand man, the guy that pushed Alma's husband off the cliff made an appearance last season as a convict. Twas good to see him, you bet . . .
But Lonesome Dove was round and complete and I read from it every summer when it gets real hot outside. And Robert Duvall was SO Gus ;-)

You are so right about Carnivale and Deadwood....I think deep inside of me there is still a little part sitting patiently in front of the tv waiting...waiting...waiting....for a conclusion. I never got the full story on what happened to Carnivale, but I do know that with Deadwood the studio and the creator had 'artistic differences' and they just pulled the plug on the whoe shebang. Boooooooo! I took it much harder with Deadwood, due to the historical factor, I believe. Plus, I just loved the characters so much, and oooooohhhhh, that gorgeous, lovely verbage! Each sentace was like a work of art...a cussing work of art, but art none-the-less.
In all fairness, I must say that I have never seen an episode of Lonesome Dove, so I can't make a call. But, for all of my girliness, I love a well placed cuss word more than some would think....

Lou: read Lonesome Dove first, then watch the Robert Duvall/Tommy Lee Jones mini-series. Book first, you bet ;-)

Deadwood sounds good!!
As for Dexter; yes, there's quite a bit of blood and it is kind of the theme for the show because the guy's a blood spatter lab analyst...
So if you can get past that the plot is amazingly good.

I don't know Kylo... I don't think I'll be able to watch it. Even when I play video games, I always turn the gore/blood off.
