hehe, yeah I was talking to some locals and they explained that there is a van that drives around the block about a good three times taking photos over and over. I guess it's okay since they do it during a time when they know no one is undressing or something funny like that. But you know there's gotta be something good they've got so far.
Like going through he tenderloin, but they didn't because they couldn't or many many reasons.

I take it you're in San Francisco then?

Yessir-- It's quite the place. I only work 4 blocks away from it too, so I see my share of wonderful things.

I saw many 'out patients' roaming the streets there, trying to piss on cars at red lights, masturbating, having sex or shooting up in alley ways, screaming at imaginary people.
Sad and frightening at the same time.

hehe, yep they're a big barrel of funky monkies down there. It's funny you bring up the pissing on cars thing because I've seen that twice already. lol
Something that made me laugh (like it's not hard) was an old homeless guy came walking down our alley way; with a big ol' long string of snot hanging from his nose like it was the coolest thing to do. He wasn't just walking either, there was a strut going on and he was taking little baby steps... The guys that work in the valet parking aside me gave me a look like "there ya go".
So he makes his way all the way down to where I'm standing and still balancing his "mucus member"; stops in front of a limo that's trying to pull up to release a bunch of drunkards-- and just bounces this damn 2 foot string of snot from his nose for a good 10 seconds... Then takes his finger- then flings it against the ground really hard, then just keeps strutting down the alley like he owned the joint.
I was trying my best not to laugh, but the anonymous humor of it all got to me so I had a red face and tears coming out of my eyes for most the night.
Doesn't take much, but I know there's a lot of shit that isn't funny too.

I had a girlfriend who lived in snob hill (Nob Hill) at the same time I lived in the 'loin.
I used to get so excited when it was time to go visit her... Those two parts of S.F. are like night and day, must be too difficult for the crazies to walk up that steep of a hill
Anything that got me out of that sanitarium was a joy.
I actually lived all over S.F. including SOMA (almost got mugged there), Richmond, Twin Peaks, Mission.
I was even homeless there at one point, living behind an apartment complex for six months or so.
I do miss S.F. a lot, and definitely left at least part of my heart there

I know, it is such a go and do town. But how did you avoid getting mugged I'm curious?
I'm over in Richmond right now- a lot of Asian neighbors that are very nice. Easy bike ride to work, I basically work right on the bottom of snob (yeah I know) hill on the south side. I've seen within one month already how easy it is for someone to lose a place and go homeless-- I feel bad that I have to stop people from begging at my doors. They are so determined all the time to just get a nickel, but most the time I'll offer a banana or something and they refuse which pisses me off.
One lady had the nerve yesterday to ask for my box of nips I use for work (candy) instead of my banana I offered after coming out of Walgreens... Shit, I guess we're used to settling for the better things when we ask for favours all day for a living.
I saw a guy two weeks ago outside a market digging through the trash-- I know it happens a lot, but this guy was in his 60s, and it was 3am; cold as hell outside. He found a sandwich and started dissecting it, so I told him to throw it away and came out with a healthy sandwich for him. You can always tell when someone's really in bad shape, this guy was mentally unhealthy, but he got a good kick out of getting something to stay warm off of all night.
It's stuff like this my friend in the valet parking puts his hands together and says "thank you god" hehe. For not making us all homeless...
No one should really be begging for change though since there are services for the homeless. Stations for food/cover for the night, but I know it must be very hard for some.
Glad you got back under a roof dude.

This thread is turning out to be a very interesting peek into life in SF (and I'm not tawkin' 'bout the google POV).
I had no idea SF was so "culturally diverse"... so-to-speak...
In the interest of food:
What the World Eats
It's interesting to see what people 'round the world not only eat but what they spend on food each week.
We spend about $140CDN per week in this household.

I walked to a bus stop around 1 a.m. (I think it was mission and 10th). When I got there I noticed this sketchy guy walking around behind the bus stop shelter.
He asked me for a cigarette but I told him the one I was smoking was my last one.
I sat down on the bench and decided to befriend him in case he was dangerous. So I waited ten seconds, walked back to him, and offered him the short of my cigarette. He took it and said "thanks", then I went back to the bench.
A minute later he walked around in front of me and said "I've got a 38 in my jacket, I was gonna rob you but you were nice to me".
I said "uhh, ok thanks"...
He saw some guy ride by in a car that he must have knew because he ran off after him yelling "yo stop".
That was my cue to get the hell out of there.
A little scary but it could of ended much worst. I'm just thankful he was a criminal with a conscience.

As for the homeless situation there, most of those people could work if they wanted to, they just choose to live off the cities compassion. Many homeless are just con artists.
Truth be told, I was taught by them on how to live off the city, state, and government, free and easy and how to avoid ever working again. I actually got on SSI because of what I was taught, but years later got sick of being poor and lazy and got a job. I then got off SSI and have never looked back.

The mugging thing is getting to be more and more of a problem in Toronto nowadays. Especially late at night. You're taking a chance visiting an outdoor ATM after midnight anywhere in the downtown core. Queen St between Spadina & Bathhurst (and points west) seems to be the worst now. Drunken Aboriginals (the scariest of the lot) and other homeless, crack-head types roaming around. It's a piss off too, 'cause most of the best clubs/pubs/restaurants are in that area of town all within a short stagger of each other. It's the best part of town to pub-crawl.
Long time friend of mine has lived in the area all his life (he's 50) and his neighbourhood is crawling with crack-whores and drug dealers now. And the cops are powerless (and really don't care anymore) to do anything about it.
Very sad...
