Ever heard of the phrase: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark
Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed to have passed its peak. Once a show has "jumped the shark", fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm.
Click the link above to find out WHERE this saying came from. While as a kid, I did watch that TV show, but I don't recall that episode.

What's the deal with wikipedia anyway?
Why is it so damn additive?

why is this expression getting so much attention these days, I wonder?
haha, the first thing I thought of when I saw this topic (and of course it's mentioned in the wiki) is that Arrested Development episode where Henry Winkler (the Fonz, and plays the Bluth family lawyer) jumps over the shark on the pier. That whole episode...with David Cross and Carl Wethers in the Burger King...haha, I'm laughing just thinking about it "it's a wonderful restaurant!"

excuse me.. heh. but Arrested Development is effing brilliant.
