sorry Roland, that was the smallest I could get it without it being so pixellated as to make the whole thing pointless. actually, I probably could have gotten away with less frames per second.
also, these shots blow mine out of the water.
we've had our doubts whether or not these are starlings. we've seen them at close range but haven't seen their speckles. these are mostly black with some shiny blues on their upper chest when the sun hits 'em. then just this weekend, we noticed definite red on them, though this certainly wasn't there last week. we saw flocks over the weekend that we now think are red-winged blackbirds but we're confused. just read the the red-winged blackbirds join with starlings sometimes.

wow - those shots are incredible! one of my fav summer pastimes is to lay on my back in the grass up on the hill and watch the starlings swarm overhead. especially when the sun catches their wings, etc. the freeze-frame of those shots give it a whole new perspective.
might be some red wings in there (one of my fav birds - the sounds they can make are awesome - always a sign that the winter cold ain't coming back for a while when I here that they've returned), but the swarm is really a starling thing. the one extremely redeeming quality of starlings.
keep it coming
(hey - the auto spellcheck on here is great!)

I'm not a big milk fan, but... that cow has me thinking that I might want to reconsider
I wonder if that's a Nancy's Yogurt cow?

aha, I came across these shots I took last Sunday. the birds were still hanging around, this time they were in the front pasture. the shots aren't anything special, but I've got 'em here so I figured I'd pop 'em in:

Man, that's a lot of birds!
And my understanding is they aren't even native to north America.

Starlings I mean... not birds in general...

unfortunately cows and alkaloids don't mix well. it kills 'em looks like chocolate milk is as crazy as its gonna get.
that is a lot of birds. we had a group come through this morning, but nothing like that (lots of ducks flying north too not even sure what they're doing here). anyway, sometimes those flocks roost in nearby trees so maybe I can catch an audio snapshot if the timing is right.
those freezeframes of bird swarms reminded me of cross country bee swarms (also not native to north america). usually you can hear them coming and get out of the way - definitely something you want to appreciate from a distance

Those photos of the starlings were AMAZING! I just kept thinking of Hitchcock...obviously.
When I lived up in the mountains my favorite birds to spy were the red-winged black birds. I don't know why, but they always seemed like good luck to me. And my favorite ones to hear were the acorn woodpeckers with their hillarious 'wake-up!wake-up!wake-up!' call.
I know I've said this before, Doof, but damn! Am I jealous of your digs or what?!
BTW...have you ever posted the wedding pics you promised? Did I miss it or have you not gotten around to it yet?
