Can anyone remember what a tune is.....

Ive bit my tongue for too long. There are some (not all) artists out there who have the gaul to upload what i can only call automated shite to the internet. It bugs me when i spend hours coming up with a tune with melody and direction. Then for some idiot to upload a bunch of hap hazard samples with a beat over it and call it music. ARRRRGGGGHHHHH and then the fuckers get to number 1 with it. Or soundscapes theres just no effort in those at all, get youself a top end keyboard and hold down one chord for half an hour and stick some stock echoey samples over it and hey presto another hit. If this sounds like sour grapes IT IS.
P.S. i know there are some excellent artists on here and all over the net and i praise them that put the time and effort into making decent music!

I like to think the chart systems are accurate but never precise. A lot of times you'll have an (quote un-quote) "artist" that will post their artistserver link on other music sites getting more traffic. Not to say it's a wasted effort, it apparently gets more people listening in. I know it's always that pasted rythm from stock sounds too... I can't stand that either- I just skip to the next tune.
There's always a reason someone likes it though... Perhaps AS should have a 'most downloaded' chart system seperate from a streaming one. That way we can really see what's valuable enough to be put on everyone's mp3 players.
I used to get frustrated too, but the only idea is to see that people are downloading your stuff.

Like most things in life, the experience you have, and what you feel, is dictated by your perception of things. I'll now describe the same thing, but from my perspective.
When I first started recording music back in 1990, I used a 4-track recorder and recorded my songs in real time. I didn't know about midi or sequencers, and my musical skills were very weak. I was very excited about what I was creating and made copies of my tapes and handed them out. Giving the music away so others could hear it seemed to make it more valid for me. There was no Web nor Websites to upload to at the time, but I'm sure if there were, I would have uploaded those songs.
The same thing continues to happen today, but it's 1,000% times easier to get your music out to people by using independent music sites. I think most people will have a similar story about getting started and posting or sharing music that we now look back on as very amateur. Personally, I don't have a problem with it because I see the site as a place where people can express, grow and hopefully challenge their creative expressions.
>>>ARRRRGGGGHHHHH and then the fuckers get to number 1 with it.
It's best to consider the charts not as a quality indicator, but as an 'interest' indicator. So what you see on the charts is not the top songs on the site, but the current songs people on the Web are interested in.
>>>Or soundscapes theres just no effort in those at all, get youself a top end keyboard and hold down one chord for half an hour and stick some stock echoey samples over it and hey presto another hit. If this sounds like sour grapes IT IS.
I understand that you are angry/upset right now, but come on, there's no needs to rip on other genres and musical styles. Well... unless it's country.
>>>P.S. i know there are some excellent artists on here and all over the net and i praise them that put the time and effort into making decent music!
No doubt, everyone would prefer to hear only music they like, but as an artist, you must know that it can take years to build the experience and skills necessary to produce high quality music. So let's give praise to those who are trying and sticking it out, even though the results aren't so good, and people say it sucks.

This would be the point where you tell us what you're doing to improve things, no? Give some examples of good stuff.
(And my two most recents tracks had lots of melody, I thought.)

Spending hours on a track sometimes (for me) leads to nothing..... The next day I see the light and make something interesting within a few minutes.....
When I try to figure out what chords are best for a particular piece I'm working on, it could take hours, while a good keyboardplayer can do the same job in minutes....the result can be exactly the same.....

I knew saying this would be risky, but before i get flamed to death. All im saying is if your gonna make music whether you be amateur or pro is that you give it your best shot. I honestly listen to some of the things all over the net not just here and i think there is no effort here. I mean as others have said it is possible to make a good song quickly but still some of the stuff is just bad". Im not for one second saying im any better than the most amateur - well amateur but i do at least try and make a progressive tune. Gideon you make some good points pertaining to people just starting out in the music world, in that they cant be expected to produce masterpieces. And i agree to a point!
When i started out all i had was an amiga 500 and a sk1 sampler keyboard. And let me tell you it wasnt easy making music that way. Nowadays the up and coming musicians have got the world at their fingertips with Digital recording, keyboards that make you sound like an orchestra all sorts of fx laden loops and beats. Yet i still hear lazy music, perhaps its me getting old and grumpy i dont know. Some of the younger electronic artists want to take a leaf out of liam howlett of the prodigys book, heres a guy who had very little actual musical training in fact none but to make up for that he produced the hell out of what he did know and that made for some of the most exciting and energetic music ever. Its just down to effort.
Just before i go back to grumpy towers i want to re-iterate that the vast majority of music i hear on the internet and indeed Artistserver is phenomenally good!

Yep, I think loads and loads of possibilities can make you lazy...it's easy to mix a bunch of loops/riffs etc. (already in the right tempo/tune, etc) and make a track which sounds like a professional recording...
This wasn't possible when I started making music either, BUT....at that time there also were artists who (IMHO) sounded horrible....although they sometimes were good musicians...
I think in the end (especially nowadays) it's all about ideas and making them into something special....

Yeah, I too once upon a time brought up back in 2003 that the charts were kinda whack because the same damn song was up for over a year just about and I got sick of seeing it at the top. It's only natural to comment on a lopsided advantage.
But Gideon said "interest" and that's a well pinned word to explain how crap can get hot.
(kinda smells in here?)

No worries dude, we've all hit the same spot; doesn't even have to be for music production.

This reminds me of the Ejay/Acid bashing that went on back in the good ol' MP3.com days. And it was even worse when ReBirth came along...

Its all very well saying sprouts are soft vegtables but youll soon graduate to the harder stuff like broccoli and maybe even (god forbid) - parsnips!
I currently snort 12 sprouts a day, I knew my addiction was getting out of hand one sunday afternoon, as the family gathered for sunday dinner. I had finished my meal and suddenly got the shakes so i whipped out my uzi and held the family at gun point, demanding their root vegatables!

Ah, Gideon... always the level head
Swerve Tweeter, I listened to all your tracks (*except sleepwalker) and most remind me of 80's new wave, but with a weird horror, circus, waltz type attitude. Your audio quality is substandard, and what's up with your quantization? Everything sounds a little off tempo, or at the very least some odd time signatures happening.
Not my style of music but you have some talent. If you're looking to chart top then I'd say do what others do, become a promotion whore. I spent two solid weeks promoting my new stuff to college radio and night clubs in other states, not to mention typical online activity. Good luck.
*sleepwalker won't stream and it's downloadable file is 0:00.
