First successful microtonal composition!

I've been struggling again with inspiration, so I didn't even touch my music tools for about a month
Then, last night I made this in about 2 hours. Given that it's in a scale I've never played before (15tET) I see that as a very good omen
I made the scale by mapping key position to pitch in halion.
I've played around with different scales before but have never been able to do effective cadences or chord changes, but something must have clicked in my brain last night.
Have a listen. But be warned, 15tET seems to be a considerable bit more discordant than 12tET and I enjoy exploring that aspect. It may take a couple of listens to get used to.

Thanks 4 listening!
It was probably more interesting to write than listen to, since to me it was like a goldfish leaping out of a fishbowl. But I'll probably try and expand it into a fuller composition.

This reminds me a lot of the inception of one of your last piano pieces, very interesting, i actually do not know much about microtoneality besides that fact that it exists, so it was out of my league for judgment, but intuitively I thought it was just plane neat. Can't wait to hear how it will expand.

Thanks for listening, glad you like it
Microtonality is just a catch-all word for tunings which differ from the usual 12 semitones per octave we're all used to today. For example the scale I created for this piece 15 steps. The 16th step is the octave.
Google around for it. It's my current musical fascination at the moment and many people report an improvement in their conventional pieces after experimenting with it.

quite nice Alex. very striking cadence about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way into the piece, as it moves into the next section...that was beautiful.
now for your next assignment, microtonal send'dnb

Send, this is really great. I've been playing it on loop for the last 45 minutes or so. I've never heard anyone use 15tet before - it's interesting how it destabilizes the most consonant intervals in 12tet (the 3rd and 5th), but makes some of the more dissonant chromaticism actually sound more stable (to me at least).

didn't find this too dissonant although it does seem like a tuning with definite eccentricities to it. which I thought you put to good use in just the right places in your piece. started out reminding me of harry partch and then somewhere past the mid point it just all falls into place and the focus seems to change from the uniqueness of the tuning to the wholeness of the piece itself.
too bad astroid power-up doesn't post here any more - I think he was into these 12tet's & 15tet's, etc.

That was really cool.
A lot of fun to listen to. It isn't at all dissonant actually... around 1:10 it gets quite beautiful, falling into an equilibrium. Not many people know that 12 tone equal temperament is really very out of tune in a lot of ways
I play around a lot with 24 tone equal temperament, mainly because all it involves is bumping certain notes up or down a half step (Check out Postulus)
This life is a joke, and nobody's laughing.

I love it!! Great work- such a hard thing to listen to and perfect... It rings so lovely... It must be stuck in a drill & bass rythm...(hit it sendy!)
& I agree with Nathan, it's not really dissonant. It seems to fluxuate in and out of dissonance for me. That's that lovely ring I talk about I believe. So it's like-- half & half.
(And nice work on Postulus too Nathan, has a great rythm)

Neotone - So very true about 12tet Some people instinctively mock alternate tunings as unlistanble but they don't realize the only reason their beloved 12 works so well is because of excessive familiarity.
But has anyone else felt choked by 12tet recently? I was just playing my keyboard one day and felt strongly that there was nowhere left to go. That's what got me fascinated with microtonal expreimentation.
And you are right about this piece not being dissonant. There are enough recognizable intervals to make fair approximations of major, minor and dominant chords. They give the impression of an old out-of-tune piano which is quite charming actually
I'm having some problems with adding bass notes. I suspect my octave is slightly stretched and needs working on.
Thanks all for listening. I honestly wondered if most people would find this tuning offputting, since I've never heard anybody use 15tet before.
Oh, doof and kylo - I have started a microtonal drill track. I just kinda got sidetracked with it. It was proving very difficult but it had chords and a bassline. I might dust it off.
