So a few new NI products came out.. I tried the Massive demo, such an excellent synth. To expensive for me, but I have a bunch of reaktor synths that can also be impressive. Anyone tried Massive? Reactions?

NI products are indeed a too expensive for most people.
So they are either: * making a great profit from their sales * or they have a lot of employees to pay * or need all that cash for research and development
Otherwise, why would they charge $400USD for a virtual synth?
What's worse than the NI prices, is their authorization scheme - a system which will render 100% of NI products useless if the company ever goes under or is ever bought out by a company who selects to not run the NI product authorization platform.
Great products once you've been able to afford them.

Software tour vids available on these pages at GearWire Massive vid http://www.gearwire.com/native-instruments-massive.html FM8 vid http://www.gearwire.com/native-instruments-fm8.html
True about the cost of NI apps but if you time your purchase right and can afford to buy the whole collection at say $500 US during pre-release, then its about $50 per synth. Then if you did Komplete2 or 3 the next upgrade (to Komplete4) is $300 (it is this year at any rate)

I have to admit I'm in love with the morphing sounds of FM8.
When... WHEN I am signed to a label I'll hopefully get to spend some money on the NI website.

Yeah for those of us with the "Komplete" bundle there's some psychological warfare going on - first they send you emails saying how awesome supermegasynth 5 is, just as you were starting to figure out how to use supermegasynth 4. And then if you don't buy it at once, they send you an email at the end of the year saying you can have it for free if you drop $300 on the next year's Komplete upgrade. And if you miss this golden opportunity, you'll have to spend $500,000 on your next NI purchase.

It's true their sales strategy is agressive. ANd their customer support lacks a bit, too. But.. if the sound is just as good as a 'real' hardware synth or even better, then the synht itself isn't overpriced. In fact, much hardware synths are way more expensive and have fewer options. I wouldn't buy it because I feel that the same VST is 75% off in the next year and there is a wealth of ensembles in reaktor (which is underpriced imo..)

but this is software - hardware carries a lot more overhead for a company - shipping, parts, factories, assemblers, testers, packaging, factory management, etc. - all of which goes into the price of the units. With software... you have a fraction of the number of people, and most of those costs I listed do not exist.
There's also resale value - you can sell your synth, but selling used NI software requires you to do a license transfer through them. Skip ahead 3-5 years... and what if NI is gone... the guy with the synth has no problem selling his gear... the person with NI software will most likely not have any way to sell the software, as the NI registration site would be gone. An example of this is Opcode and their sequencers, Vision and Studio Vision - both were possible the best sequencers for years, then Gibson bought Opcode, and killed all the products... now there's no way to get support, or upgrades, or even replace a registration floppy, etc. Anyone who wants to still use Studio Vision has to find cracked versions of the app to get around any problems. Back to the resale issue - as you can imagine, a person would not be able to resale Opcode's Studio Vision today, yet the synth I bought years ago back when I used to use Vision, still has value, still works.
While having a great sound is important, software synths shouldn't cost the same as 2 months of rent. I feel the same about most software - and fortunately, open source and developers of affordable shareware help keep the ball rolling for those who don't have the cash.
