Anyone noticed increased Stats lately?

Just been surveying my stats for December and there is a marked upward spiral. Which is fantastic, but ive noticed everyone is enjoying more hits recently. Is this due to the Twitter intergration? and of course free mp3 base from twitter too, because those services have been running for a few months now (if memory serves).
Anyway i aint complaining its great to reach more people, even with my sub par music.

Yes - you are correct, although I don't know why. I've been running this site since 2001, and usually our traffic dips a bit from Dec - Jan, so this is a nice change. I hope it's a growing trend Hey world... we're over here!
Music stats for the whole site:
September ================================== Total Downloads: 59,148 Total HiFi Streams: 64,795 Total LoFi Streams: 9,257
October ================================== Total Downloads: 68,901 Total HiFi Streams: 69,807 Total LoFi Streams: 10,466
November ================================== Total Downloads: 95,378 Total HiFi Streams: 67,175 Total LoFi Streams: 12,837
December ================================== Total Downloads: 154,244 Total HiFi Streams: 78,903 Total LoFi Streams: 15,010
These numbers are not exact, they do not include songs which have been deleted, which also deletes their stats.

My stats stayed about the same for November and December.
What surprised me was that there were any plays at all. My five songs here got at least as many plays as all sixty-plus of mine on Soundclick. (And last.fm? They only infrequently admit I exist ...)

Looks like the site has near exceeded its 2004 peak

My stats have climbed markedly though the year from 183 downloads in Jan to 667 in December with even more pronounced growth in streams from 57 to 800 which is great but I'm not getting any richer! I mean The number of hits over the last 3/4 year has also grown steadily. I guess this is as much down to the spread of decent broadband speeds as it is to anyone likeing the music.

feel your pain man. Ya know, the Bohemian clubs take in musicians as members. That's one pro for financial value compared to a lot of cons; in respect to "being" around rich folk... Of course we're all wealthy in our own ways. I say this when my new bicycle gets stolen for the second time. World ain't fair.
edit: holy shit! I got 2727 downloads for december!!! That's a record! What's Wintermute getting??

What the hell? Who are these 903 people? Why are none of them on last.fm?!

I think the majority of ppl there are only into commercial music. Their site ranks in the top 500 and gets approx. 3.2 million unique visitors per month.
I too have very few songs being tracked on last.fm - and that is with over 100 songs available online for free.

I dunno, there's a massive commercial factor in the site, but it has a huge underground scene too - just looking at all the plays for various obscure artists and such. Yet I struggle to find any of my songs on there at all sometimes, especially mixed in with other artists called Second Thought. I suppose I just find it odd there's so much of my music download and very little seems to be played! It'd be nice to hear from these people.

Yep, I agree, there are a lot of independent (unsigned) artists over there who get lots of plays....

You know im kinda desperate to know who these people are, who are downloading all our stuff. It feels faceless and even my paranoia keeps saying are they even real people.
I keep thinking that its some sort of automatic link provider thats doing it.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be the same sort of thing that I see in my system logs:
115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:40 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41 115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:41 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41 115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:42 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41 115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:44 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41 115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:45 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41 115.51.165.143 - - [03/Jan/2010:00:11:46 -0600] "GET /sound/Polarizers.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 200 41
... and so on. It goes on for a few hundred of those, up to ten a second, a few times a day. It's from various IP addresses. I've wondered if it's the world's most laid back DDoS attack, or what.
Note that when this started, each 200 message would report that it'd transferred a few meg of the 10 megs or so the file actually had. Thinking it might be legit, I replaced the real mp3 with a link to that track's place at Soundclick, so downloaders would head over there and the traffic would be reflected in some stats. (The url's 41 bytes long.)

I have a series of checks that happens with song requests through the ArtistServer system - but here is the general rule...
Each IP can stream, download, grab a ringtone, and play a preview - and get tracked once per 24hr period.
So in the example Just John posted, that would only show as 1 download.
We do get indexed by mp3 search sites from time to time, and over the years, and I've blocked several IP ranges from Bejing China due to getting attacks from there. Same thing every time, they request mp3s at too fast of a rate, essentially generating a DoS attack. From what I can see, they are trying to download our whole mp3 library.

That sounds like a sane way of counting things.
My whole stash of mp3s on just-john.com does get grabbed a few times a week, but that's what it's there for. Besides me, there's stuff there (with authors' permission) from Dino Dimuro (who's been recording himself for over three decades,) the Lumiere Brothers and Caleb Bullen.

I remixed a Current 93 track and lef the mp3 on my site - it gets grabbed many times a week, despite this being the only place I ever linked it to, and that was on the old board, back in 2004/2005 I think. Still, even if some downloads here are automatic ones, there'll still be a lot of genuine listeners - which again draws the question: who are they?! Haha. Come on fans. Get in touch!
