Here's a fun wow wierd wonder I made whilst foolin' 'round with this cool lil' synth app I bought for my Nintendo DSlite.

If you're not familiar with what I'm tawkin' 'bout.... the Korg DS-10 is actually a very robust and amazingly feature rich app that is capable of some pretty fancy schmancy sounds. I was quite surprised.
The program looks (more or less) like this:

That's pretty much a main screen type shot. There are many, many more once you start drillin' down into the interface a bit. Pretty advanced stuff.
Anywho...
Hope ya dig the tune..!
Note: the track consists of 15 step sequences for those who wanna know

cool - so it has a step sequencer and a synth - how many channels can you run at once?
I've been playing around with Beatmaker and noise.io on my iphone, but have yet to produce a complete tune with them.

You get two analog synth emulators and one drum module, a 6-track/16-step sequencer (one track each for the synths and four tracks for drums) and three types of audio effects (delay, flange, chorus). Patching capability on the synths and knob control during playback. A Kaoss pad for on-the-fly fun, fun, fun as well. 16 patterns and up to 100 measures per song and a total of 18 sessions/songs per card. All for $30. Not bad, eh?
Took about two hours total, start to finish, for this track. No post processing, just out from the DS to IN on the 'puter.

Wow, are the drums from that thing? Those are nice and punchy. No post processing? Thats pretty decent. Sweet little track. If I owned a DS I'd make a point of getting this. Exciting.

Yup... everything you hear is straight outta the DS. This proggy sounds awesome with headphones too. You can rumble the best system with it as well as create some pretty decent ear piercings too. I was a little concerned about using the stylus to operate the synths/drums, but you quickly get used to the idea and it's actually easier than I expected. The sequencer runs/edits like the ol' matrix style patterns of Roland drum machine days. Dot on/dot off sorta thing, know what I mean?
Tons of control as well. Note values include volume, gate, pan. legato and the Kaoss pad can be assigned to pretty much any of the knobs for realtime manipulation. It's quite addictive and really fast to put something simple together (as you can hear) or use it on the go as a sketch pad. And if you really wanted to "post process" the tracks it would be a synch to just record each track's audio one at a time into an external program 'cause you can mute/unmute and control individual track volumes, panning, etc from the mixer window. But it's really not necessary since the whole shabang sounds great on its own. It's like a portable, pocket sized version of ReBirth, but with lots more control and a much faster, more intuitive interface.
Glad you all dig it. You should look for a second-hand DS. They're out there and go for cheap. You could easily get a DS and this program for well under $100. That's gotta be the cheapest, most portable DAW I can think of. Great value for the money.
Anywho...

And the best part is there are three settings you can assign knobs to (X & Y style) and any surface movements you perform on the kaoss pad can be recorded, realtime, to make them part of the currently selected/playing pattern. Of course you are confined to a 16 step loop, but you have up to 16, 16 step patterns per song and you can do some pretty freaky recordings and then link them all together in the song matrix. The drums can even be played manually as well and can be recorded in realtime too. With two stylises (or even your fingers) you can get some funky shit goin' on. Hell... with the knob movements recorded, and FX applied, playing the Kaoss pad whilst your pre-recorded stuff is playing creates some really off-the-hook jams. And all this can be on-the-fly so it makes the synths and drums great for "live" type performances. Get one synth goin' with a bassline, add some knob movements via the Kaoss pad, throw in some drums and then play along with it all with the other synth. This thing is just waaaay too much fun.
I think it's fair to say I give this program ***** out of *****
