Hey guys So, I'm kind of in the market for a new sampler. I'm not totally sold on using a lap top during my live sets, so i was using a ES1 MK2 electribe, cause it was so simple, but super limited in terms of space. I've been looking @ the MPC line, and can't really come to any conclusions. My budget is about 700, any suggestions for a decent sampler? -Erik

I used a Yamaha SU700 exclusively for about two years (2000 - 2002) for all my shows. You can pick 'em up dirt cheap now. Some are fully loaded. And they are only limited by the amount of memory (SIMM) you have installed. Internal floppy (HD), ZIP drive storage (SCSI), multiple outs, excellent internal FX. A bargain really.
Otherwise...

Or you could try to find one of these

Have´nt tried one myself but nearly bought one 2nd hand recently, i really need a good, simple, portable sampler and i think this is the one, also has loads of FX to mangle the samples.

Here's some questions you should ask yourself before making a sampler purchase - based on your replies, I or someone else should be able to better guide you to what you are looking for
how do you plan to use your sampler?
Do you need to load single 1shots, single loops, etc. - or are you looking to load an instrument sample set and be able to play it via MIDI?
does it need a sequencer?
make sure the sampler you select has an easy means to load samples from your PC. Ideally, you should be able to plug the sampler in and load it from your PC.
are you looking to hand trigger samples live - do you need trigger pads?
have you thought about the size/length of the samples you want to use? As this will be a limitation on every sampler - memory, storage, sample length, and even sample rate. Be sure to check.
=====================
BTW, I have a sampler for sale that I don't use: an AKAI S2000 - it resells for 275. Mine also has the expansion out card (8 more outs), maxed RAM (32mb), and an external zip drive (much better than using floppies) with several disks. I'd sell it for 300+shipping

sonic I plan to use the sampler live mostly. I want something that would be able to output some stuff on separate channels, since I send a headphone track to a drummer, a tick track would be nice (i do'nt know if this option really exists, but seems pretty fathomable). I would like some midi capabilities, to maybe trigger some drum machine stuff. Loops and Individual hits are both necessary, although mostly single hit stuff, if I couldn't hold long loops that would be fine. i'd like a good amount of memory, as it would hold all sorts of stuff for my live set. I do want it to have a sequencer. I guess i'm describing a dream here kinda, but ultimately I guess its to trigger all the stuff that I or my drummer can not do, being a two piece is tricky, but really fun . Good questions, it really organized my thoughts, actually the Yamaha SU700 looks kinda cool, i'll need to do more reading! Any suggestions? -Erik

The SU700 is definitely a cool performance oriented piece of kit. It is rrrrrrreal easy to use and loads of fun. You can do some pretty freaky things to your samples with it.
If you're curious at all about what it might look like in action check out da pix.
Pic1 & Pic2
Quite the pile on the table, eh? Note the set list in pic2. Yes... there was an audience. I'm facing them in da pix ya silly....

Should at least give you an idea of scale.

Yup... that's my trusty ol' 505 alrighty. I used it to start/sync all the gears I used and as a simple sequencer. I didn't trigger anything 'cept internal samples on the SU700. I never actually tried triggering anything external. I'm not sure if that can be done or not (I tend to think not) and I don't have the box anymore to be able to tell you if it can or can't.

has anyone used the sp 606 from Roland? I've been looking at it online, and it looks pretty handy, maybe a little flashy. Some of the cool features seem like stuff I'd not use too often, and some of the setbacks seem like stuff I'm not concerned with. If anyone has used it and has anything to sway me one way or another, please do tell!
