what are you working on, what's up
Created on: 08/20/08 11:54 AM Replies: 25

what are you working on/producing these days?

Anyone making progress on a new song? Finish an old one? Create something? Eh?

I tried the old 'start from scratch' method to reboot my musical creativity recently. I'm not sure if it worked, I'm still trying to make sense of the track Very Happy So far it sounds like musicians from India and near by regions ran into a Mardi Gras parade while on their way to the studio to record some old school hip hop.

Aside from that, I have a growing collection of 2min tracks that I haven't been able to finish. I've heard them so many times now, that I'm starting to think some are actually done Very Happy

Not much else on my end, although, I do have a new UT3 map/level coming out soon, I posted some screenshots in the photos area on the site.

I have done some more coding on the site - cleaned up the My Account area a bit, and worked on the Remix Projects tool/areas. I also had to work on some code to protect the site from recent attacks, we were getting hit fairly hard for a few days - quite annoying.

We put a 2nd garden in a few weeks back, and it's already doing very well. It looks like we'll have twice as many tomatoes than what our other garden bed produced.

Ah - and I've been battling the ants. Anger - grrrrrr! Every few days, they attack from somewhere, and now they enter from beneath the house, though cabinets and corners. The other night, we came home to find a 2in wide ant superhighway in the kitchen, hitting up the dog food. Uhg.

I hope all is well with you and your family Smile

Nothing wrong with 2 minute tracks. Music doesn't have to be any particular length to be effective imho. 2 inch ant parades not quite so groovy.

How about March of the Ants as your new song title. Smile

I'm working on a new project called Psychogenic. I have been developing a website for the whole concept along with writing putting a vocal on Megastructure which has been scaring my girlfriend and neighbours. The good news is that I have a publisher interested in the whole project so fingers crossed there. Smile

Web design wise - busy. www.korukoru.com for as friend of Lizzie's that sells jewelry, a new Half-a-Second design (in progress) and a redesign of my own music site: www.jackpickett.com

Today I sold my piano. Sad
Storage costs were just too damn high so I sold it to a guy called Tim who seemed really nice. He also said that if I missed it too much I could go round and play it sometime.

I've also been glued to the Olympics like a crazy man. Go Usain.

I vaguely remember something about you and ants awhile back Gid, or was that someone else? Maybe it was doof and wasps?

Anyway, I'm currently trying to finish something started by hellscion. It's about 80% done, and then there's the five other tracks I poke at now and then. Nothing too exciting here really.

Olympics, yardwork, made a podcast over at Pod-O-Matic (Agent A is over there, anybody remember his HeadTones shows?), put together a music video featuring the artwork of Pablo Amaringo and for music Pink Floyd's, 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' mashed with a trippy 'LoveCraft's Adjectives' track, compiled all my fave bits from 'So You Think You Can Dance', started reading Stephen King's 'On Writing' (dude was drinking a case of 16 oz. per day, 'The Shining' was about himself, 'Misery' was about his drug & alcohol habit ((Annie Wilkes was booze & coke)), doesn't remember writing 'Cujo' at all, 'The Tommyknockers' was about his habit, written with cotton swabs stuck up his nose to stanch the coke induced bleeding, he was down to drinking Scope & Listerine, doing Xanax & all kinds of scrips, farking chapter reads like 'Requiem For A Dream', the part actually about writing is mostly cribbed from Strunk & White's 'Elements Of Style'), reading 'Lonesome Dove' for the umpteenth time, reading Faulkner ('Intruder In The Dust'), reading Truman Capote's 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' & 'In Cold Blood', scanning old photos and making music videos for families and friends, playing with the dogs, hiking, drinking too much beer, put together a video of Mt. St. Helens for the neighbor kids, put together a bunch of video stuff of the neighbor girly's soccer skills, re-mixing 'Green Cathedrals', auditioning tons of .wav files from back in the days when I only had a 6 gig HD and saved everything on CDs, making grammatical errors, growing bored with . . . sleeepy . . . coffee

No ant invasions here. Hope you don't live near a nuclear facility. I know how big those pesky lil' things can get. Believe me... I've seen the film.

The last few mornings Liam and I have been hangin' out with a Praying Mantis that's living in our yard. Friendly lil' fellow. Liam's not brave enough to hold 'em yet. But he's crawl'd on me a wee bit. Good flyer too. The Mantis that is. Found a body this morning without a head (no it wasn't Liam). Thought it was our lil' prayin' buddy, but turns out it was just some other pretender to the throne. Didn't know how to handle himself around women I guess.

Laughing

Oh... and be sure to check Johnny's PodCast. Classic tracks in that mix.

D.A.M. excellent tracks..!!

Wink

cheers everyone....

I heart preying mantises.
When I was a little kid we'd just moved to a farm from NYC and I was playing Army and, shot, rolled down the hill behind the barn and came to rest nose to nose with my first ever preying mantis. It was large and green and LOOKING AT ME I was farking TERRIFIED my heart leapt out my damn mouth. I thought it was a Martian or Zanti Misfit or such Woah WTF!?

Heh, D.A.M. Very Happy Those were the days. Remember "12:1 dl trades ALL DAY LONG!!!!"
and "303Infinity" "Wow, you can make 120,000 dollars in downloads!!!"

Anybody ever hear from Zeeza or FT?

Thanks for the memories, Steve. And for the shoutout . . . Agent A remembers you fondly.
cheers

Hey guys! I got pissed at some composer 'friends' who basically stabbed me in the back when I was doing a decent amount of work for them for free. Bunch of snotty academics anyways - http://sequenza21.com - anyways I found out some shit about a live show they're putting on and how I was cut out because I was in the last one and the two organizers put their own stuff in. Anyways, I decided to set up my own online new music community, and it's totally getting off the hook now. http://netnewmusic.ning.com - it's probably not of interest to most of you guys, but in one week we already have over 300 members and around 500 tracks.

Also just got two commissions, one to write a soprano sax and piano piece (yo KennyG!) and a piece for vibes and harp from a group in Vienna. And I got another commission 2 weeks ago from the mandolin and guitar group out of Germany. Already written 3 pieces for them! They're talking about a solo CD.

Been surviving Fay. That was a fuckin' nightmare. Wasn't just the scariness, but the indecision. Should I stay or should I go - over and over (evacuate this little sandbar we call home or stay and weather it). Finally decided, Cat 1 stay and protect my gear and our stuff from any flooding that might happen. Elsie was pretty scared, well we both were. Turned out to be nothing which is great - but still makes it weird. Finally got the plywood off of our windows yesterday!! Been living in the dark and listening to the rain for 3 days. Yesterday was nice - went to a marina restaurant and had a couple of pitchers and some grouper sandwiches and biked back home. Today it's raining again.

Here's our Flickr Photostream of Life on Sanibel

re "I decided to set up my own online new music community . . "

Just joined up. Maybe upload some avant-garde Token Wonder shiite Very Happy

Man if you do dat all bets are off!

Glad to know you and Elsie are staying dry and safe, Jeff. I was just reading the news and heard that Fay was coming around for a third strike, but mostly hitting the Atlantic side of Florida. I ran to my map, looked up Sanibel, and was relieved to find it on the Gulf side of the state. Wink Being a California native my specialty is earth quakes. I wouldn't know what to do in a tropical storm or a hurricane, so I have been very worried about you two.

As far as what I've been up to...well...you'll all just have to wait to find out! Very Happy

But here's a little bit:

My work is soon to get cut to half-time due to the suffering in the industry I work in. I've been busy in the yard (we have a few little praying mantis right now, too), busy with the pups, and, of course, I've been enjoying Elsie's book!
Cool, right on. I can see why you (Jeff) have read it several times. I love the way she describes her characters. I was just heading out to lunch yesterday when I found myself daydreaming about Pythagoras at a red light. Hey, who doesn't, right? So it was expecially cool to sit down with my sandwich a few minutes later, open the book, and read the part about 'those dudes' Pythagoras and Samos. Laughing I wish I could say "Great minds..." but I think I'm outclassed here. Smokin'!

Nice to see everyone has been so BUSY!

For me, the usual: working on too many things the same time...
But mostly music...just started doing some DnB-tracks.
I might release 3 or 4 tracks as a virtual EP, maybe under a different name...
Also I'll try to release the Classics (?) vol.2 EP this year.
Haven't been working on it for a while now, too busy with the vinyl-release and many other things.
And...there might be a real release in 2009 depending on the material I already have or produce the next coming months.
Oh...and having enough cash is also important, I almost forgot.... Very Happy

Still working on my first WAR-level for UT3....

I unveiled the first picture of my cathedral -- does that count?

And I finally figured out a not-horribly-clumsy way to insert rests while step recording on my XL-7. (Simply map a button on the controller to a note sent on a channel you're not using.)

I've been slowly working on redoing one of my songs "Dawn of a New Era" and when I'm done I'm going to change the name.

Either my computer or my RM1x has been destroying floppy disks, so I have to find out which so I'll know how to deal with it. Since I can't use the floppy disks I can't save anything I do on the RM1x since the memory is full. If the RM1x is the problem I might have to spend a good amount of money to get a nice keyboard to replace the RM1x and the casio keyboard I use.

I'd like to start a new song, but not being able to save my work makes me hesitate. Not much else is going on.

Hi Jack - you are right, there's nothing wrong with 2 minute tracks - I should have included that most are only drums and basslines or not single grooves that don't evolve. Maybe I'll post one - see what happens Smile

>>I'm working on a new project called Psychogenic. I have been developing a website for the whole concept along with writing putting a vocal on Megastructure which has been scaring my girlfriend and neighbours. The good news is that I have a publisher interested in the whole project so fingers crossed there.

I checked out the site when you posted the link - I like the name. Publisher interest already - nice! Starting over in some way does seem to bring focus doesn't it.

>>>Today I sold my piano. Storage costs were just too damn high so I sold it to a guy called Tim who seemed really nice. He also said that if I missed it too much I could go round and play it sometime.

now there's a blues song

Sorry to hear about the loss. I'm still missing my Fender Twin Reverb amp, and that was 6 or 7 yrs ago.

=======

Hi Subtronik ,

>>>I vaguely remember something about you and ants awhile back Gid

Yes, it's my annual complaint - I held out as long as I could, but the ants went too far. WTF?

>>> It's about 80% done, and then there's the five other tracks I poke at now and then

yeah - that's about where I'm at. I know there's a track on my hardware in the RM1x from about 2yrs ago that was unfinished that sounded good. I've been thinking about giving that a try.

==========

Hi Love Adj,

>>> started reading Stephen King's 'On Writing'

wow - I didn't know that about him - he sure seemed like he was wired out beyond belief - so it was true eh?

I see lots of video editing in your post - what software do you use? I'm using Premiere Pro, but don't feel very comfortable with it yet. I've used Vegas, and liked how it worked just like Sony Acid.

==========

Hi Jeff - Congrats on the launch. A Ning site, that should lighten the stress load of managing your new site.

And all those commissions - whew! You gotta love that. I couldn't imagine getting commissioned to write or record something.

Glad to hear the two of you are ok.

==========

Hi A Bit Crusher -

I'll keep working on the track, even if it doesn't progress much, I'll post a demo in a week or two. I like the beat in the new track you just released. I need to download it to give it a good listen. I'll dload and play your new map too Smile

>>>For me, the usual: working on too many things the same time...

are we a community with low attention spans? Very Happy I'm exactly the same.

=========

Hi JJ,

>>>I unveiled the first picture of my cathedral -- does that count?

is that a mailing/discussion list you manage? and yes - it does count Smile

=========

Tecknixia - floppy drives are cheap - you may just need to replace the one on your RM1x. Do you have an old pc laying around? pull the floppy and try swapping it out w/ the one in the RM1x. Be sure the floppy drive in your current pc isn't the issue first. If you are worried about taking the RM1x apart, and you have a digital camera - take photos of the unit as you work on it so you can refer back to them if you need it.

=========

Cool, right on. Happy Friday Razz

Hi Gideon, I'm using Pinnacle Studio 9 for editing. It was easy to learn but I need to save often because the dang thing hangs up every five minutes. It's a real pain because of it's bugginess. I'd love to get Adobe Premiere & After Effects as they're supposed to be kickasz (and I already have the DV Rebel's Guide For Making Action Movies On The Cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/DV-Rebels-Guide-All-Digital-Approach/dp/0321413644

And I want one of these:
http://www.lafcpug.org/reviews/review_dvx_pd150.html

and a bunch more talent lol. Re Teknixia, I'd like to get a backup floppy drive for my ASR-10 but was told that drive adheres to the old 'standard Shugart' interface or something. Wait . . .

Here:
"Also many synthesizers that have floppy drives use the standard Shugart interface pinout. This is why after replacing a faulty drive many people ask around the Internet why their new floppy drive doesn"t work when connected to the synth but works fine on their PC."

I love Google. oh yeah!

btw: That's a good idea - taking pictures of a dismantling project so you can re-mantle it correctly.

I'll probably try that sometime, but I'm starting to lean towards just getting a Korg TR61

Well, my musical mind has all dried up for a bit. So I'm not writing anything for the moment.

I have two tracks on the back burner... everything is finished except the parts which require other people. So I'm waiting patiently for School to start, then I can find the people I need.

I'm working on a documentary film about globalization, but I'm running out of money, so it may be a year and a half before I finish it.

I wrote a short story, and I'm thinking about trying to get it published. It's very complex, and, I think, very good. However, everybody says it's confusing. hmmm... huh? Not sure people like it. But then again, much good art is confusing. So, you never know.

I post a lot of deep thought on this forum -- that's kind of a project. I encourage other deep thinkers to post there too. (My username is MultipleTentacles if anyone cares. Cool )

Other than that, just going to work and meditating.
This life is a joke, and nobody's laughing.
