F*UCKING PEOPLE!
Created on: 09/07/07 11:31 AM Replies: 27

...or...I guess I should say 'The Ying and Yang of human beings.' Today's lesson is in the good and the bad we see in our fellow travelers on a daily basis.

I don't know how to even put this into words, but I'll try. I'm still upset. My hands are still shaking.

I was on my way to the office after making a stop, cruising down a busy street when I notice traffic has stopped and people are milling about in the street. Someone is waving their arms. I stop to see what has happened and that is when I see the dogs. There are three and one has been hit. The person who hit the small dog just kept on driving. Anger - grrrrrr!

The other two were so upset they were trying to attack anyone who would get near their injured friend. Because of this no one would help the pup who had been hit. I asked a man to try and get thier attention, keep them occupied, and I would try and pick up the dog. It was bleeding from it's mouth and showed very labored breathing. I had a sweatshirt in my truck so I used that to wrap around it. It weighed almost nothing. It never made a sound. After I set the dog down on the side of the road we got back to the task of trying to round up the other two dogs. They kept running back out into traffic and we were afraid we were going to see another one get hit. Two more people pulled over and helped us. One lady called our local Animal Control. Together they got the pups cornered between two houses and waited there with them until animal control came.

I remembered I had left the injured dog alone and went back to try and comfort it. There was nothing I could do so I just kept telling it that it 'was a good dog'. It died. The animal control officer smiled at me but told me in a very uncerimonious manner that it was 'dead' and picked it up and placed it in the truck. I never even found out if it was a girl or a boy. It had no collar.

The officer told us he had been called out before due to these three dogs running wild across the busy street. The owner had been warned just earlier this week.

Those of us who were still there lamented the dog that had been lost, complained about the asshole that drove away, and thanked each other for helping in whatever way we had. Then we all got back into our vehicles and went to wherever we were going. It wasn't until I got back in my truck that I started to cry. The dog that died looked just like our dog Lola.

I'd like to believe that the person who hit the dog and kept on driving didn't know what he had done, but that's not what I have been told by witnesses. That makes me want to scream. How can they live with themselves? I don't know

I'd also like to send out a cosmic 'Thank You' to the handful of random strangers who pulled over and gave up a half an hour of their day to help some scared dogs. They give me hope. Neutral

Fucking people.

Thank you, Gideon. I can't wait to get home and see our pups. Please give them a kiss for me.

And anyone else out there with dogs, give them a kiss today, too. Cool, right on.

Crappy day. Sad Sorry Lou, it's good to know you guys safely executed a dog rescue on the freeway. (always have flares) I keep mine in my dash; only $1.75 for a 25 minute flair. If you did, good.

Damn. So the two other dogs were trying to protect him? Poor kids... I can just imagine trying to protect someone from these big humoungous metal monsters flying at you. And yes, that pisses me off too; when all it takes is one person to look 5 to 6 seconds ahead to put on their hazards and stop.

Good work! Glad you guys are okay.

Stay the way you are~ Cool

Thanks, Kylo! I knew Miles loved/licked you for a reason! Very Happy

I'm doing a little better now, I'm just worried about the other two dogs. I don't think the pound will release them back to their owner. They may just get put down, and that is too bad. Anyone looking for two crazy little chihuahuas for their home? Confused

That's a sad story, especially for an animal lover.

At least it won't have to live a life of pain and/or surgeries, it's at peace now.

I'll be pulling my pups a little closer tonight.

Yes! Hug the puppies! Smile I definately felt a little better once I got home and got covered in dog kisses.

This story is extra sad because we have four chihuahuas... Sad

The mental image of 'blood in the mouth' of the little chi makes my heart fall.

What happened to you today is indeed sad. And your feelings of anger and frustration are certainly justified. But take comfort in knowing you did the right thing, Lou.

Cool, right on.

Kind thanks to everyone. I feel much better today. I have snuggled, played, romped, canoodled, hugged and kissed our pups until they run from the sight of me. I'm going to call the Animal Shelter and see if I can get some status on the situation. If the remaining two dogs are in the pound I want to help them find a good home, and make sure they go 'together'. If they were reunited with their owner I will file a formal complaint. I've never seen anything like those two little guys fighting everyone off of their comrade in the middle of that busy road. Crying or Very sad
So...if there is something I can do to help bring about a change for the better, I will do what I can for them.

A small status report; sad, but not a big surprise. The local Animal Control took the animals to the pound and then offered them back to the owner. The owner came down to the shelter and told them he only wanted ONE of the dogs back. He left the other one there to be adopted or euthanized. I found out he is being nuetered today (the dog, not the owner...too bad) and then will be available for adoption.
We already have our two (legal limit here) but I will do whatever I can to find him a home. Anyone in San Diego looking for a lonely firecracker chihuahua??? hmmm... huh?

What an asshole for breaking up those dogs Anger - grrrrrr!

I understand the two dog limit Lou, but who's going to know if you and Gid adopt the chihuahua?

Are there dog police that go around inspecting homes looking for more than two?

Well....Gideon would notice.... Laughing He noticed the last time I brought a chihuahua home. Smile
I will do EVERYTHING I can to find a home, even if that means being a 'temporary' home for him for awhile. I have several friends that are in the 'rescuing' biz and I know they can help me, that's why we (and my family) have eight rescued dogs between us. If I thought anyone of us could realistically take on another one, I would ask. Again, bottom line, this little guy will NOT be forgotten or left alone until he is 'put down'.

You rock Lou rocking

Thanks for caring about that little guy.

Ah, you made me cry...you bastard!

I already talked to my Mom about the situation and she is going to start spreading the word to try and find him a home. My name is now on a list so I will be contacted if he is not adopted in time and I am going to go visit him on Thursday so I can get a more realistic view of his personality. Not that freshly nuetered and in a cage is all that happy, but still... Wink

Here's one pooch Lou won't have to worry about.

Smile

It was a rough surf on Lake Michigan on Tuesday afternoon, and there were a lot of strong currents going... so rough that the surfers were a little anxious about the water.

But that didn't deter the man and his old dog from walking down the pier together, as they always did when the waves got big. The dog loved to walk the pier when the lake was rough... he'd go off-lead, bark at the waves, and then retreat when the water crashed up onto the pier.

This time the waves were a little bigger, though, and then a particularly big wave hit at the wrong moment. It even took the man off his feet; the dog missed his chance to run back, and as the water rolled off the pier it carried the dog with it, right into the lake.

Surfer Matt Smolenski (right) saw what was happening. He had seen the dog before, barking at the waves on the pier. With the owner desperately screaming for the dog from the pier, Smolenski didn't hesitate; he told his fellow surfer Joe Riopelle (left) that he was going in for that dog.

Smolenski set out on his board, on his stomach, and got past the waves to reach the dog just as it reached exhaustion and had stopped dog-paddling. He grabbed the dog by the collar, put him up on the surfboard, and Smolenski and Riopelle helped the dog surf in to shore.

And the owner thanked them with a high-five and a "Thank you, brother!"; and then man and dog left so fast, nobody could get their names.

Cool, right on.

I got the biggest smile out of this story! I read about this on Yahoo a few days ago and I thought 'THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!' I needed that. Very Happy

Such an awesome story! Thanks for posting it here.
Cool, right on.

So what's going on with the little chi now?

He is still in the 'rehabilitative' stage at the local animal shelter. I guess he walks the walk as well as talk the talk. They still will not let me see him (can you say 'liability'?) nor can they tell me when, if at all, he will be put up for adoption. Since he is not currently of adoptionable status, I cannot put my name on a list to be contacted with information. Instead I have to go down there in person and check every few days. At first it upset me (the inconvenience, the time, my emotions each time I go there) but it has turned into quite a positive thing. I now know that the shelter needs old towels, dog toys, buscuits and food donations. They even need help walking the dogs. I work just a few blocks away from the shelter and never knew about any of this previously, so this is going to be a long-term relationship. Wink

They are closed to the public on Mondays, so my next visit will be Tuesday. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks so much for inquiring. I still think about it each day when I dry past the place it happened.

I couldn't enter a shelter without leaving with new family members.
