What is this whole thing?

How did you make this clever forum contraption Gid? Did you build it yourself?

Open source? Paid package? What is it?

1/2 and 1/2

the initial forums was built by Ray Camden, he gave it an open source license, then another ColdFusion developer, Rick Root created an offshoot from the original project.

I took the 2nd version, which is open source, and spent a few days modifying it so it was integrated into ArtistServer, yet remained a separate database and application. I took out a few things and have added others, like the tabs on the right of the posting box.

Once we have the photos area on AS launched, you'll see a tab there for your photos - which makes it easy to post photos to the forum (at the correct size too).

Do you have to run it on a specific type of server?

it's in CFML, so you would need CFMX6.1 or CFMX7. There's hosts out there that support it. My ISP has great rates, offers shared and dedicated hosting with ColdFusion, PHP and ASP.

I think the forums will run on Blue Dragon, which runs CFML like ColdFusion Server does.

you can see the what I started with by looking here: http://www.cfmbb.org

hmm....

I decided to try out with phpNuke in the end as my server won't seem to support ColdFusion and its certainly to damn expensive to install.

Shame really - this looks like a damn good application - certainly the best forum solution I have seen that can tie in with someones account

Looks friggin super. However, that is the second time I wrote that. The first time, I wrote it, and then I chose the smiles tab, because you mentioned the tabs and then my words dissapeared? glad I only wrote three words. If I had made a huge rant and then my words were erased, I'd be super bummed. Just a comment from a beta tester. At the bottom of this window, it says Save or Preview. How about "Post"....? just a thought.
rok

Danny - there are many hosts that offer ColdFusion

Ibrow - what browser are you using? The smilies tab seems to load just fine each time I look, and I haven't had my text vanish... I'll try it again... Very Happy
zoned out
yep - seems fine.

I'll change "Save" to "Post"

I know but its for a client who doesn't want to switch servers. I can't believe how expensive Macromedia products can be!!

Anyways I'll have a look at Coldfusion hosters next time I need a bit of webspace for my good self!

Yeah CF seems expensive - but it's a very complete platform for Web App development. While most developers will say PHP is the best, now that I've been dabling with PHP, I find ColdFusion to be a much faster language, cleaner, and more complete in terms of functionality. I found it odd that PHP doesn't even have application variables.

I buy my copies of CF on eBay, as I can't afford the software either. I've told Adobe/Macromedia people this, I've even emailed them a few times to point out the issues that exist due to the huge price tag. Now that Adobe owns CF, and is a company that is doing VERY well, they could afford to lower the price and greatly increase their market share. One of my points to Adobe, was the there are very few to NO startups these days that are launching with The CF platform - and it wasn't because the platform sucks, it's the initial cost of entry. They never wrote back, but I'm sure they think that it's affordable due to Web hosts offering CF with their hosting alongside ASP and PHP. That works for some people/projects - but not for cases like ArtistServer - which wouldn't work on a shared hosting plan.

Yeah - that sums it up really. Shared hosting won't cut it for this project either. So you bought it on ebay did you?

>>So you bought it on ebay did you?

I bought all the AS software on ebay: Windows 2000 server, MSSQL2000, and CFMX 6.1 (upgraded to 7.0.2). It's the only way I've been able to afford it.

Right now, I could use another copy of CFMX, but can't afford to get one. I want to move all the music files to it's own box and this would be the easiest migration path. My other option, is to fully replace the streaming methods used on ArtistServer, using java or php. If we had some cashflow, I'd co-locate the music at a streaming provider - which would give us multiple data centers and much more bandwidth.
