San Diego is on fire!
Created on: 10/23/07 04:23 PM Replies: 23

As of today we have eight separate fires burning in San Diego County. Over 300,000 have been evacuated with more on the way. The latest list of areas being evacuated are: Julian, Crest, Carlsbad, Solana Beach, Harbison Canyon and parts of Chula Vista and Rancho San Diego. Over 1,500 structures have been lost.

So far we are safe, but surrounded by fires on three sides of us. The closest are 10 miles away. I took some photos early this morning of the flames from two separate fires which were visable from our bedroom window. Shocked The pups are a little freaked, but handling the situation well. We have the vehicles gassed up and emergency items at the ready. The worst part right now is the waiting and worrying...

All local schools and most business are closed (and have been since yesterday) since the air quality is so toxic and so many families need to prepare for possible evacuation. I came home early yesterday and only went to my office for a few minutes today (to check messages, etc.) and the city was like a ghost-town. Creepy!

Several of our friends have had to leave their homes, but so far we have heard no reports of personal loss. One of the most touching stories so far was of a news-reporter who was reporting on his own destroyed home. It was heartbreaking. He's in full gear, tears running down his face "This was the deck, this was the garage...this is what I came home to..."

So, please take a moment to remember what's really important in your life. Send some hope or encouragement to every brave soul out there who's trying to help, and keep San Diego in your thoughts.

Fires from space on 10/22/07:

Damn. You guys stay safe

Damn... that's truely scary stuff. We heard on the local news here that we (Canada) have fire-fighters on their way there to help out as much as possible..

Stay safe!!!

San Diego Sunrise Fire

This was taken the morning of Oct 23, 2007 - Lou took several, and I blended two of them to make this longer shot. This is taken from our bedroom window - the fire was getting close.

Google map of fires, San Diego county area

I saw from the map that the San Diego Zoo's "Wild Animal Park" is in the burned area. However the Zoo's website indicates the animals are safe even though the park sustained some fire damage.

So far the Harris area fire is the closest to Lou and Gideon, at about 8 miles to the SE
I think I heard something about the direction of the wind is expected to shift to on-shore about Wednesday.

Holy shit, we're thinking about you guys and all of CA. We were in fires in Missoula a while back. Not fun.

Yep, it's another morning full of smoke and anxiety. I wish I could say I've been sleeping well, but, well... Neutral
I'ts hard to relax and sleep when you're waiting for the phone to ring with an evacuation call. So far we are still 'OK', but we do have one fire behind us and one below us that are both a little too close for comfort. Right now I am mostly worried about my parents and grandparents. They are in East County and would be on the next evacuation list.

News today is that some of the winds have died down and that we'll have a little more precipitation in the air by tomorrow. Other than that... Confused

You can see flames from your place??

Woah WTF!?

Wow... that's a lot of smoke. How's the air quality??

stay safe, guys Neutral

We once helped fight a field fire behind our home. It spreads in all directions which is scary enough, because you don't know which way to fight first. Faith just fell back when we saw it was hopeless and turned the hose on the house to soak it down. The rest of us kept trying to put out all these little fires that were springing up everywhere. When some of them made it to the woods they began to spread above us as well as all around us and with the smoke and cinders and noise and all it was suddenly terrifying. What a relief when the fire trucks arrived! Nothing compared to your fire and plenty scary enough.

I can't see the flames now - the nearest fire is now just over the hill in that photo above, and Lou said she heard on the radio that this nearby fire could go all the way to the ocean.

The air - it smells and feels like we were camping for days - and you wake up to smell your campfire smoldering... and you realize your hair and clothes are emitting the smell of smoke. We have 1 door open for the dogs, but the rest of the house is closed up.

If you have some time today - head over to flickr.com - and search on "San Diego fire" - and you'll see a lot of photos.

I'm sure we'll be ok Smile Have no worries everyone - and yes, the server is far from any of the fires.

Man, this must be like a nightmare. We just bought a house (been living in an apartment until now) and I can't imagine the horror of everything burning down to the ground...

It is so good to hear that you guys are safe so far.

Thinking a lot about you these days!

I heard about this yesterday at work, and I thought, that's strange, why didn't I hear about it on here? Anyways, I hope to hear that everything turns out ok!

I have a friend who recently moved to San Diego, but I'm not sure where exactly. I'll have to find out how he's doing.
