Music is it Free Use uncopyrighted to use in vids
Created on: 12/27/06 11:24 PM Replies: 4

looking for music to use in videos is a bear, it has to be free use uncopyrighted or used with permission in order to upload to the video prescences on the net, where is this usable music? Is it here for us to use freely in our for compensation videos?

Gideon (the site admin) can prob'ly explain it better (and would be more than happy to I'm sure) but in a nutshell....

This site uses the Creative Commons License policy. You'll see the little CC box under tracks on the site (Click it for more info). What it basically boils down to is this... most artists here are more than happy to let someone use one or more of their tracks in a project (I've done that many times). The ol' ask and ye shall recieve just give credit where credit is due rule is the only stipulation.

Just contact the artist about the track in question and work out whatever deal is necessary from there.

These are the license types we offer that you 'could' use - depending on how you are going to use the music - and how you plan to distribute the film.

I suggest reading about Creative Commons licensing at http://CreativeCommons.org

Attribution No Derivatives - must give credit, no new works created from song

Attribution - must give credit

Attribution Share Alike - must give credit, and must share what you make

Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives - must give credit, no commercial use, no new works created from song

Attribution Non-Commercial - must give credit, no commercial use

Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike - must give credit, no commercial use, must share what you make

Public Domain - free to do whatever you want

================
things to consider
================
1. are you going to sell the video/film?
2. is this a commercial release?
3. how will you give credit to the artist?
4. do you plan on using the song as is, or modifying it?

Now to find the songs... Just click on "Music" from the main menu, then scroll to the bottom of the page - you'll see a listing of all the license options - click on a license name to view the music associated to that license.

Downloading music - once you find a song you like - you most likely would need to sign in to ArtistServer before you can download the song. All music by artists with free accounts require you to sign in to download.

Feel free to post more questions. Also - ArtistServer is not an agent nor representative of the artists on this site. We do not guarantee anything about the music you download - all music is provided by the artists under an agreement whereby they state they own 100% of the rights to their music.

Once you have something selected - let us know Smile

Thanks, Gideon. Wasn't sure if I should chime in or not, but thought I'd give 'er the ol' college try. Very Happy

muchas gracias Very Happy

This should be good info for a lot of site visitors - I'm sure most people don't know that Creative Commons exists or what the license options are.

If anyone has any questions on Creative Commons, just ask Smile

If you aren't sure what your license settigns should be for your songs - just ask.

And... if you don't know what your license settings are for your songs... jump into the My Account area - and click on "My Music/Media" - and view your songs - and change the license to what you want.
