Who uses alternative tunings confidently?
Created on: 12/27/06 08:42 AM Replies: 5

I'm really getting into this. In particular I've become a fan of stretched octaves, whole tone scales, and well-temperament, but I'm also experimenting with things like 16tet and using multiple scales for different parts within a piece.

i'm sometimes fiddling around with alternative tunings, but to be honest I haven't got a clue what I'm doing...

So most of the times these experiments sound awfull...

I will be posting the last 3 songs in my Lucy scale series before the end of the year. I still haven't tried "flipping" any of these pieces to standard tuning, in order to hear the differences.

For guitar, I am a big fan of DADGAD or open G tunings - especially on a 12-string

I play a few tunings on my guitar -

* Dropped D: DADGBD

Used On: Originally Wanted, Composed In Thin Air, Heavy Meditation, Galactic Alignment

* an open G tuning: GGDGBD

Used On: a lot of songs I play for Lou, nothing released

* an open C tuning: CGCGDC

Used On: Brewdog Strut, Stomping Grounds

I use alternate tunings to find new progressions and chords i wouldn't normally play or find in a standard tuning. With open tunings, you can also get a nice drone/sitar like vibe if you play only a few strings and let the rest ring out - which I've done on a few tracks. I find alternate tunigs to be a lot of fun.

Earlier this year, I released "Down Here, Over There," which uses an alternate tuning. In that case - I just kept detuning the guitar and plucking until something started to sound interesting - once I found a sweet spot on the low E (i think i took it down to Bb) the rest of the tuning came together. Unfortunately, I didn't find out what the tuning ended up being. What's cool, is that the song couldn't have happened unless that tuning happened first.

Do I use tunings with confidence... no... it's more of a feeling around in the dark experience Laughing

here's a link to the tunings used by one of my favorite guitarists... Michael Hedges.

Michael Hedges was an amazing artist - I'm soooo glad I saw him live while in college. His style is amazing to watch. If you don't know anything about him - there's some videos on youtube. He's known for playing a 'tap' style - he plays with both hands usually on the neck and augments his playing with slaps on the guitar body, harmonics and rich sounding open chords. Just as a person would accompany themselves on a piano, Hedges does so on a guitar. Listening to him, you would sware you were listening to more than one performer. Cool, right on. Cool, right on.

umm... why not just sit down and twist the tuning knobs back & forth until you hear something that sounds intriguing? I do it all the time. certainly for slides & drones, but a year or so ago I used it for leads & melodies too. if you don't really know where you're at you can discover all sorts of surprises & challenges. and after all... it's just tuning knobs. Cool
