what is your setup?

now then,
I'm back after a break whilst moving house, getting married.. the usual excuses! Hi to all the new faces, salutations to the regulars.
I'm just unpacking and dusting things down and have realised I don't want to ruin my lovely new house with my dusty and ancient audio equipment.
My system is 5 years old - it was top of the line when I bought it but now it's obviously not and I want to move on, as I think I've done everything I can with it and I'm low on inspiration. I'm hoping new ideas will come with getting a new setup (hardware/software) and playing with new sounds and methods of creating music.
I know it's been done before but I can't get onto the old forum so I'm going to start this thread again: what do people use to create their music?
I'm not interested in PC stats like RAM etc, I just want to know what software and hardware people are using nowadays. I can then check out your music, see if it's a style that I am interested in, and therefore whittle down my options from the myriad of setups out there.
In particular, I want to know whether I need to unpack all my dusty outboard equipment (more suited to acoustic music than IDM etc), or whether it's better nowadays to just stick with all processing via the PC.
For example, my setup is as follows:
PC cubase VST32 5.0 r4 soundforge novation KS5 synth no outboard other than preamp and monitor amplifier various mics + acoustic instruments
looking forward to your feedback, I'll take all comments into account before hitting the high street with my mastercard!
Will

Hi Will, welcome (back). (Can we find you on AS or elsewhere?)
in fact, I don't think it's really important what equipment you use. Yes, off course it's important to have a system which you can rely on if it comes to recording the music you make. (In terms of sound quality, things like that).
But I would certainly not throw away my old equipment, sometimes it's just easier and more intuitive to use knobs, faders and strings.
Ever tried to use a virtual mixingdesk with your mouse and keyboard?
I know, it is possible, but it also takes away the flow when you're recording...
To make very precise adjustments later, it might be very handy, though....
Greetings, Roland

In studio mode it's:
PC laptop Reaktor 4 Cool Edit 1.1 Encore Electronics "Knobby" controller
And for live performances this is the setup:
PC laptop Reaktor 4 Encore Electronics "Knobby" controller 4 channel mixer Electrix WarpFactory vocoder DOD bass distortion pedal Ibanez analog delay pedal BBE compressor/sonic maximizer Furhman power conditioner
very economical setup, in terms of both space and money. the laptop is 4 years old, the pedals are ancient, I won the vocoder in an essay contest, and I bought the knobby 7 years ago for $100 (it's built like a tank...highly recommended). the mixer is behringer ($50), etc.
there are tracks on my artistserver page and different ones & videos on my dotcom site.

These days I'm mainly using Reason V2.0 (free from a friend) on a PIII laptop (I bought second-hand from a courier at work). I control Reason with an Oxygen8 that I bought off ebay for $50.
I also have a boatload of gear as well. Mostly stuff I've collected over the past couple decades from scouring the pawn shops and message boards at various places I've visited over the years. Pedals, KBoards, Synth Modules, sequencer, photo-theremin, FX rack with all kinds of multi FX modules, some custom built noize makers a friend of mine put together.
My latest release can be found here:

Ahhh, the old gear thread!
I'd stick with a PC. I've had access to some nice 'dusty' gear for a while, and they just dont stand up to the ease of a computer. Outboard gear is a pain in the butt and is inconsistent. Invest in Midi controllers and a nice A/D converter in my opinion.
swamay rocks the following:
Ableton Live 6 rewired to Cubase 4. Symbolic Sound Kyma X Roland A-33 Korg Kontrol 49 Kenton Control Freak Doepfer Drehbank Reaktor 5, FM8, Albino, Kontakt 2, Absynth, Korg Legacy Digital. Event Monitors
The analog studio I share with my room-mate has the following:
Serge Modular Korg MS10 Korg MS20 ARP 2600 Roland System 100-M Roland Space Echo Korg Echo Plex Encore CV 2 Midi Roland JD990 Roland 1080 Korg Wavestation A/D EAW Monitors

sorry, yes I haven't got round to updating my AS site yet as it's all changed. My most recent work is The Composure EP, which I finished just before I packed up and moved house.
Feel free to take a listen!
