it is called... the power of the iTunes app store - the traffic is the effects of mobile apps for browsing and downloading music, and we're one of the bookmarks they list.
traffic has died down a bit - but we were suddenly seeing a peak of 40 - 66,000 unique visitors per day, which is now down to around 35-40,000 recently.
There has been a 2,300% increase in visits to the site over the last 30 days.

the majority of the traffic we were seeing are people looking for commercial artists and music, and had not realized that we hosted independent music - so the reviews on the mobile app will occasionally say things like, "ignore the default sites - that music sucks" - we'll it certainly doesn't suck - but if all that person wanted to hear was Lil Wayne or Rihanna -then everything else probably does suck to them.
most of the mobile app traffic is gone now - but it may come back, this is the 2nd time it's come and gone. We'll be a bit more ready for it next time. They relied heavily on the search feature, which I hadn't worked on in years - I've just done a major overhaul, and you'll soon be able to search on commercial artists names and find artists like them. This is done using one of the artist profile fields where you can list similar artists. This should lead to better click throughs on the site, and hopefully turn more people on to our music.

There is so much phenomenal professional chart top quality music at this site that it's not funny. There are just few corporate music products/artists here, such are promoted as being popular in mass media so that people think they represent what is good and popular.
It remains a fact that the average music consumer listens by referral, and has no time to listen to find the best, like someone always has to do, and so they want sites which tell them what they should like, where only the finest commercial products are presented to them, not all the music that is available... It's one of the problems all independent music sites have faced, where consumers want to be spoon fed, and do not wish to hear a single imperfect song.
Something which never found a place with average music consumers was "exploring" for music, by listening to one band after another in charts and listings and search results, where a single unimpressive performance can find them going elsewhere for music.
I think there should always be an artist community referral system to showcase the best
artists, for those site visitors who do not want to hear a single challenging song, lest they leave.
Mobile smartphone apps have been accounting for a slew of new traffic to the station here as well, and has been opening up the music to many new music consumers, and it's worth watching closely how the advent of smartphones is increasing the importance of free music download sites among music fans they are bringing to them.
I could note, however, that many of the best artists at this site have not been very active here for a while, such that they have tended to become obscured in the haystack, but they are here.

Anyone reviewing the music of these artists, alone, would find more excellent music than they are ready to experience, and these are only the best electronic music artists at this site, for there are many, many more phenomenal artists here in other genres.
