Spent a few days in Niagara Falls (Canada) and had an awesome time. One of the many things we did was visit the Butterfly Conservatory. This climate controlled facility has over 2000 butterflies (over 50 species) in an 11,000 sq ft rain forrest type setting (humidity is like 75%). Pretty impressive stuff. Seriously... everywhere you look there's butterflies. On you, around you, above you, near you. I took a lot of photos. You have to be fast though, 'cause they flutter away quickly. But they're very tame. Not afraid of humans at all. It's really quite something to see.
If you are ever in Niagara Falls definitely put the Butterfly Conservatory on your list of "things to see"!!
This shot of a Banded Orange (Dryadula phaetusa) turned out real good considering I had to lean over a railing, put the camera on macro, hold the camera at arm's length, centre it and snap the pic as fast as possible before the lil' guy fluttered away.

btw... the lil' guy in the background is a Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius)
Both are native to South America.
Dig it, baby!!

That reminds me that there's one over here in SF...
The only pictures my aiptek can take are macro now because I dropped it when I went to go get shots of Bay to Breakers with all the nekky people running.
But I am certainly holding too much scenery from you guys, I need to get a new one.
Butterfly conservatories are awesome I agree... I just saw a monarch down here for the first time in three years.

Gideon: it's a great place to hang out. If you sit down, and are patient, the butterflies will land on you and use you as a resting spot.
And they have feeding stations for the butterflies all over the place. They put out orange slices and bananas and sugar water for the butterflies to feed on. And they go nuts feeding on the flowering plants.
Thing I like most about this shot is the way the bright colour of the butterfly makes it look almost 3D against the green background.
