Demo disks: has anyone ever bothered?

Sorry I havn't posted much lately, I'm working with a small label up in Eugene to release my album w/in the next month or so. We were all wondering if anyone had ever bothered pressing demo disks prior to the release of their album, and if so, was the price worth it, and were the demo disks received by reviewers etc better than the actual cd? I don't know
We're planning to do a run of about 500 of my album, and if we decide to do demo disks, just have some company print just the CD and we would buy the jewel cases and make our own disks. Any ideas, suggestions, comments, criticism would be much appreciated. Hope all is well.
