ID3 Tag Support - Are your ID3 Tags Set?

Depending on what you use to encode your mp3s, you may or may not have your ID3 'tag' set in your mp3 file.
An ID3 Tag is a set of information that is included in the mp3 file and is displayed by mp3 players by default. If no ID3 tag is present in the file, mp3 players usually attempt to figure out the artist name and song title from the filename.
At ArtistServer, we've always served your songs to people with both your artist name and song title, but until today, we didn't have a means for you to edit the ID3 tag within the files.
When I encode 'my' mp3 files, I usually open them in WinAmp and fill out the ID3 tag info, but I'm sure a lot of artists out there are not doing this, most likely because they are not aware of the ID3 tag nor how to set the information in the tag.
No problem... we can help
When you view the listing of your songs from the "My Account" area of the site (this is where you'd go to upload or edit your songs), you'll now see a new option/button for "MP3 ID3 info" - click on the 'edit' button you see, and wait a few seconds for the server to complete the process.
The server will take your artist name, song title, description, upload year, and genre, and write them directly to the mp3 file. Now when people download your mp3, all the important information is saved along with the file.
There is a field for "URL" - but after tinkering with the JAVA object to set this value, I kept getting errors, so it's left out.
For best results, do not stream your mp3 before or during the time you click on the edit button, as the process could fail.
Enjoy

I remember a bug at electronicscene with ID3 tags...
If any my songs had any ID3 tag information the beginning of them would get cut off by a second when being streamed.
I haven't added a ID3 tag since.
Btw, it took me hours to figure out what was causing the problem

Well and nice but it's not really an "edit" button is it? I mean its not form based and it only writes what is in the artist page description. Maybe it should be noted that if there is existing info in the ID3 tag it will be overwritten. For instance it writes the upload date into the date field and that may be different than the "publish" date the artist wants on the song. Anyway, overall not a bad function. Like you, I've generally used winamp to edit the tag before uploading.

Hi, I felt 'edit' was better than 'update' - clicking the button will edit the mp3 by writing the information stored in the database to the mp3 file.
Adding more text to the song listing page will clutter it up, there's no room to output an explanation, I could get into adding popup help/divs, but that would mean adding them all over the MyAccount area, something I don't think I can get to any time soon. I'll add some info in the help section on that page though.
We don't have a 'published on' or 'composed on' date field - so the upload date is written. Yes, all current ID3 info is overwritten in the process.
This feature is mainly for those who do not fill out their ID3 information, and for those who change their artist names. Specifically, a member with an upgraded account and 60+ songs on the site had thought that all along the server was writing the ID3 tags, and recently discovered that this was not the case. So instead of having him re-upload 60 songs, I finished up some code that talks to a MP3 java object and added the functions that wrote to the ID3 tag so he'd save some time.
While I could spend more time on this and create an ID3 editor, I just don't have the time these days, and no one has requested the feature. Sorry it's not as complete as it could be, I was just trying to hammer out a feature for someone and rolled it out on the site just in case others needed it. If more people start requesting a full-on ID3 editor, then I can redirect my time and build it out.

I had mentioned this to Gideon the other day - I had assumed that the info on the song page had automatically been imprinted in the mp3 file. not! that left me with 64 tracks to tag and re-upload - something I certainly wasn't looking forward to.
so for me - just wanting the basics for the tracks that are out there - this is very awesome. big thx Gideon - yer a prince!

I always do that to MP3s of my own creation as well as any that I've DL'd that haven't already had that done to 'em. But... there are _A LOT_ of peeps that don't, which has bug'd me for years. It just makes good sense. I mean... why wouldn't you make the effort to provide as much info as possible about the mp3 and/or yourself as well?

BTW...I checked the MP3 ID settings-button in Safari (OSX.4), but when I press it, nothing happens...
Not that I need this function, I always set the tags before uploading, but maybe other artists have the same problem?

man - what's with Safari - It sure has some annoying bugs.
all i'm doing is displaying a button that links to a page - there's nothing even tricky about it. It simply recalls the same page and outputs info at the top - I'll boot my mac and take a look.
thanks for the heads up

A Bit Crusher - it writes the current data you've entered for that song to the ID3 tag - it doesn't present you with a form to edit. I'll change the text that displays after it has completed so it's more obvious that the the process is complete.
Then again - if you don't see any listing of what was written to the file, there may be some error.
What song were you trying with? Do you know what you encoded with?
I have a feeling that poorly encoded mp3 files will toss an error. By 'poorly encoded' - I'm referring to how the encoder creates the id3 header in the file.

Ah...now I understand (apparently I didn't read your explanation in the first post very well)

I do see a listing, but I'm on XP now, I'm not sure I saw that same listing in Safari or Firefox, I'll check. I always create ID3-tags in iTunes in OSX...

Yep, I also see the listing in Safari and Firefox on the MAC...
Next time I'll read before giving any comments...
