Does anyone know if artistserver is still a hunting ground for talent. I was producing here when it was electronicscene.com who had Raw42 in tow to immediately sign up good acts. Does this still go on ? Does anyone know of anyone here getting signed. If you did give us a shout. Thanks

Hi, not sure, you will have to ask the other regulars, i.e. Gideon who runs AS. Maybe a few got signed but can“t remember? There is certainly loads of talent here! Cool, right on.

Is anyone but kids producing simple 'stuck in your head' tracks getting singed anymore hmmm... huh?

"Signed"? Haven't heard that word in ages. I don't think our kind of music gets signed anymore. You have to do the work yourself these days! Lots of nice DIY labels out there though.
As for publishing for adverts and such like Raw42 did, I have no idea where to start for that these days. I did recently get a couple of my tracks used in videos by someone who found me through my page though, so that's something...

Yes - but as members, we don't provide any additional artist or music management services, nor do we get involved in music licensing - although, we do support Creative Commons licensing which has brought us a degree of traffic due to flexible licensing.

While we helped promote Raw42 in the past, it was a completely separate venture. I don't recall how it ended with them, but I do remember that Ian and team gave it a good effort.

There are similar services - I think DannyK belongs to one and has had some success with licensing his music. It's quite a flooded market - so I think the only way to gain traction, is to get in with a company that is actively licensing and has the connections in place to do more business.

Everyone can have their own opinion regarding getting signed, and I'm sure there are a multitude of definitions as to what this means... but my take on it, is that you most likely don't need to be signed - and that success can come from the DIY route paired with performing live frequently, selling music direct to fans, and building your fan base - but it is quite difficult - especially if you are a team of one.

Did anyone get signed off of this site?

I'm not sure, I do know there are artists who went from mp3.com to ElectronicScene/ArtistServer who went on to put out complete releases, and joined small labels - but I do not in any way claim they were noticed because of this site. Who has gone the furthest? Here are some artists who have had some success that were previously on this site:

Bluetech - still putting out albums, touring, DJing
Ochre - not sure on his status
Electrostatic - I don't think they are together any longer
Captain Ahab - still putting out albums, touring, making videos
Doofgoblin - was signed to an indie label, put out 2-3 albums, I think he still performs

Does anyone else recall an artist/band to add to this list?

I never knew Bluetech used to be around here!

Ochre's doing well, he's put out three albums and an EP on labels now and pays the bills doing mastering jobs. Ludo (Multi-Panel) had his first album on Unschooled, before they disappeared off the map. Mostly doing netlabel stuff now though.

A lot of people have gone the indie route and are running their own little labels now - I have Jerky Oats, Themis has a fairly acclaimed run of avant garde releases on his Triple Bath label, Tim (Full-Source/Off Land) runs No-Source Netlabel - actually, his Off Land project is up there with the more successful netlabel acts, one of his albums was released on EnRazzeg and sold quite well I believe.
In my experience, this is the best way to go these days. Spend a few hours looking for independent labels on the internet (and I've done this many times) and you'll find the market's almost over-saturated as it is, there's so much in the way of DIY electronic music that, to be honest, label owners don't need to go out looking for artists anymore, as there's always somebody asking to be released. My advice is taking a few hours out of your time and finding artists, finding labels they're released on, maybe do a bit of searching through Discogs.com for associated labels and such, and sending demos to them. Smile

Internet killed the radio star.

Thanks all. Bit of an eye opener. No knight in shining armour and I can pull my hair up and get on with things myself !.
