Artist Implants 3rd Ear Into Own Arm
Created on: 10/12/07 02:29 AM Replies: 9

The technology-based performance artist Stelarc had a third ear implanted onto his arm in 2006 and is now considering taking the next step. "I hope to have a tiny microphone implanted to it that will connect with a bluetooth transmitter; that way you can listen to what my ear is hearing," he told the Daily Mail

WTF?

It's amazing what some people will do for their art!

Gotta be a hoax.

If not the guy's an idiot for sure.

Nice Vanna White pose.... but can a blind monk light his thumb-cigar?
What next, a third eye on his inner butt cheek?

I said the same thing to Johnny when he sent me the e:mail about this yesterday.

This stuff reminds of those people that get implants under their skin of devils horns and stars and other odd stuff to go along with the tats they get.

But this takes da cake.

Anybody go to his website? The guy seems to have some pretty deep stuff to talk about. (My kinda cup of tea for sure.)

Apparently, in other performances, he's "displayed" a metal sculpture inside his stomach (you heard right), and suspended himself by metal hooks (not all that different from a carny side show) and attached eletrodes to his body that moved his skeletal muscles in accordance with impulses that he received (at random?) from traffic on the internet.

He's exploring the notion that the human body has become obsolete relative to the technology we use. Our crudest interface with technology is a mouse and keyboard (or joystick if any of you are like me and love video games), but it's external to the body. Stelarc is all talking about literally upgrading the human body to have a direct interface with the digital dimension that we uncover with computers.

This sounds awesome to me. For a long time now, I've been using the internet, and computers in general, as a metaphor for understanding aspects of the universe that our bodies do not allow us to: specifically, digital dimensions that occupy no physical space but store information in complicated (holographic?) codes. It seems way efficient to me. And if we could capitalize on it, as a species, well then that'd be super.

Stealing this one for the newsletter too. Wink
