I haven't felt this confussed in awhile...
As most of you know, Gideon and I are vegetarians, and have been for about 20 years. We try not to preach about it, but it's important to us and how we live our lives.
Now, here is the problem: I just had a happy client 'reward' me with four, huge, fresh, Florida live lobsters. As I write this I have four pissed off crustaceans scratching around in a box in my office. Gideon and I won't eat them, but I know my parents would just LOVE to have fresh lobster tonight, and they have been kind enough to watch baby Gid while I work, for free. Hmmm..... do I give them the four beasties with a 'Bon Appetite!' when I pick up Gid today? Or do I make a Ninja-run to the beach and set them free?
I just finished reading Julia Child's "My Life in France" and I have to admit, the 'foodie' in me started thinking "Wow...what can you do with a lobster?" as soon as I received them. But then I looked into the box, saw those beady black eyes and thought "Man, you guys are a LONG way from Florida!"
So, do my parents party it up tonight or do I sneak off to the beach?
Help!

Actually...they (and the rest of their buddies) were destined for China! This is what my client does: drives from California to Florida to pick up fresh lobsters in season, drives back to California, packs them up and ships them off to kitchens around the world. I have learned a lot about the process from him, very interesting job indeed! So yeah, I bet they would make it to Holland...but first I would have to get them their passports!
Gideon just pointed out to me that if I released them at our beach in San Diego they most likely would not survive. So I have a feeling that my parents will be eating a very fine dinner indeed!

sorry love, but they probably won't survive long if we dropped them into ocean from the pier. Then again, we do have lobster off the coast of San Diego, so maybe they might.
You could call the aquarium in La Jolla - maybe they'd take them?

I could call my Dad and ask him what he thinks, since he used to work for Scripps Institute of Oceanography himself, but I don't know if I could trust his answer. If he knows the alternative is a big lobster dinner for him, I'm sure that would colour his response.
Should we overnight them to Sanibel Island?????

We'd be glad to throw them in the ocean for you! We'd eat them if somebody else cooked them, but we don't like to kill things if we can help it... ;) Thanks though!!!!!!!!

Well...they went ahead and took care of the decision process for me. They died.
I guess they sat in my office a little too long today while I tried to make up my mind. There's a moral to this story somewhere....
They are now awaiting to be made into a lobster stew at my parent's house. I know this will be a nice way for my parents to start their weekend. The lobster? Not so much. I think their weekend will suck.

Hope it's not too late, but you really cannot eat shellfish that is dead and uncooked. It get salmonella FAST! Food poisoning at a minimum.

By 'died' I meant 'mostly dead' as in The Princess Bride. I called my Dad and asked him what he thought I should do. These little guys were pretty weak by the time they made it to my office, so I just got them to my folks right before they completely croaked. Since my Dad used to be an oceanographer, he knows a lot about shellfish, so he told me the same thing you did..."Get them here NOW or they'll be wasted anyway." Last I spoke to them two were to be boiled and eaten with butter while the other two will go in the stew. Us? We're having grilled veggies, a salad and some rice with a smoothie for dessert.
Thanks for looking out for us, Jeff!
