Was in the local post office yesterday takin' care of business and while standing in line I noticed a sign that said; "American Money No longer Accepted"

Do the feds know something that their not telling us?

Just how bad are things stateside?

Maybe it's payback for Americans making fun of our money?

I don't know

Personally I think its a form of protest in reply to remarks Hillary and Barrack have made recently about NAFTA.

Between the two of them they've more than ruffled a few feathers north of the border.

Politics being what it is, and Canadians being obsessed with it, and we love a good fight, Hillary and Barrack have been taken off guard by all the fuss it's getting in these here parts.

There was quite a big cheer up here when McCain stood up in our defense. Something that Hillary and Barrack totally dropped the ball on.

If it ain't broke... don't try ta fix it!!

Sorry, Gideon... maybe I should've put this under World Politics?

The valet guys at my work say that the bohemian club (which is a very wealthy/multimillionaire organization) started investing in gold this last 2 months.

Sounds really bad actually. On top of all this, I'm only going home with 2 to 8 dollars in tips on busy nights; people are extraordinarily cheap lately!! On a normal night I'll take home anywhere around 20 to 30 bucks.

That's sucks about the tips thing. Money always seems to be the first thing affected when it comes to financial climates, eh?

I'm a 'newsaholic' and this is what I've noticed lately...

The U.S. is currently in a recession. Bush is furiously denying it, but the businesses are starting to speak up and I believe other countries are starting to take notice. Our housing market is the worst it has been since 1945. The car industry is about to implode (Nissan was the first to come forward and actually admit it). Construction is down and it is getting harder and harder to get approved for a loan. Lines of credit are being reduced by the lenders as they notice the property values slide lower and lower and NO ONE is spending money. Restaurants are going out of business at a record rate...lowering the cost of meals doesn't seem to be enough of an incentive. Interstate truck drivers are abandoning their vehicles at truck stops because they simply can't afford to pay the cost of fuel (you want to hear negative comments about NAFTA? Talk to a long-haul truck driver in the US who can't make his truck payments, let alone feed his family). We, as a Nation, are hoarding. We are preparing for a long financial winter. And others are starting to take notice.

I do, however, find the comment funny considering that they are now accepting Euros in New York. I guess it does say a lot, doesn't it?

On an up-note, if any of you guys were thinking about buying property in the US, now is the time. zoned out

The recession signs are clearly written on the wall and have been there quite for some time but i think the economic reports have been too optimistic or understated.

We have been getting these reports for the last few months but only recently has the use of the word "recesssion" been widely accepted (economic decline for 2 quarters in succesion). On the subject of Bush, surely he proposed an economic plan not more than 1-2 months ago right? In answer to the real estate crisis. Was there a question of it being passed in the Democratic congress?

US dependency on oil, probably the highest in the world, combined with the record prices. Bush even tried to make an appeal to OPEC just a day or two ago when he was in the middle east discussing the situation in Israel & Palestine.

The housing situation with the subloans that apparently led to masses of ordinary US citizens not being able to afford their rent?

Due to this less spending and consumerism.

To top it all off financial investing in other currencies than the US dollar due to the record low currency rate (on the swedish national radio news today). They were talking about low the dollar was: 6 swedish crowns to $1, 5 Norwegian crowns or less to $1 and a new record compared to the British pound.

Let´s not forget that the Iraq war is costing the USA trillions of dollars and is a massive burden to the economy but no one in the media (CNN-BBC-SR-NRK or otherwise) seems to mention it??? An economic recession is surely going to effect the whole global economy so it's probably just the start of a long and slow decline.

Must be great for europeans to come to America to visit! Smile

Oh and it is man-- Lots of Irish the other night at work.

I hear rumor that the "amero" might be a new thing for currency. Combining south america & North with Canada, but I doubt canada wants any of this shit.

Yes...the houses are relatively 'cheap' right now and only getting 'cheaper'. I feel sorry for all of the folks who bought houses when the prices were unrealistically high, and now can't afford to pay their mortgage and can totally kiss the thought of refinancing their loans goodbye. There are sooooo many 'foreclosure' and 'bank owned' signs up in our neighborhood right now, it's damn scary. Ummm... what?

Well, the same happened over here....banks we're giving mortgages which were too high for some people....

Well... we truely feel for our brothers and sisters south of the border. What happens there impacts us as well. For instance...

To my American friends. Move to Canada. We need the workers as our workforce is beginning to experience a shift meaning a lot of jobs needing to be filled when the "boomers" start retiring.

Plus the weather is fantastic....

Ummm... what?

Cool, right on.

You don't have to tell me twice! I've had my eye on Canada since I was a kid.

The latest today...

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar's value is dropping so fast against the euro that small currency outlets in Amsterdam are turning away tourists seeking to sell their dollars for local money while on vacation in the Netherlands.

Well, I guess we won't be visiting Amsterdam as soon as I would have liked. Rolling Eyes

Add to this what Greenspan said recently about our 'financial future' in America and things don't look too good.

I'm just saying... zoned out

Oh, dear... the next eight months are gonna be quite the ride for Americans.

Hang in there...

Cool, right on.

Not only is it hard to pay for gas and housing, but it's hard to get a job in the first place!

I went more than 3 years with no "real" job-- one that pays enough to live off, offers health benefits and such. All I had was a part time tutoring gig. Wasn't bad... but more suited to being a second source of income to earn a few extra hundred bucks per month.

Finally, I got a full time job by magick. Trouble is it doesn't make me happy. But I wouldn't dare quit, cuz I am not trying to be out in the cold with no source of income...

Cursed reality. Damn you!
