Improvisation Sessions

Please feel free to post your random, spontaneous, improvisational audio twiddling here. I'll start.

Subtronik - Exitus

Did this in 2001 using a Kurzweil K2000, Yamaha RM1X, and Digitech TRS-24S.

Exitus - listening now....

that underlying groove... love it - you have something there - a full tune about to happen. The squelchy lead has some good lines though - did you capture the midi?

I think if you drop the lead, and add some minimal lead or very open chords - using either a Rhodes or Vibes type of sound - dripping in reverb, you'd have a sweet sounding moody downtempo track.

Exitus will have it's day! Smile

Exitus has exited sadly... I have nothing from that original jam session except for the raw wav.

It was made when I first started learning my hardware and heavily experimenting. Then I went mostly VSTi, and damn.. it really slowed my production drastically.

Doesn't matter really though because I've recently started getting back into producing mainly due to acquiring an HD camcorder. I'm about to complete a very dark exotic piece with video.

Everything happens the way it should, except for when crap songs come up on shuffle mode in winamp.

Pretty. Simple yet complex.

Has texture and movement.

Like.

Beautiful track there Stereofect! Cool, right on.

I will dig around and see if i can find something appropriate to post. A lot of my recordings are just that. Improvisations, so i like the ideaVery Happy

Btw, heard your´s Subtronik. Really liked the main synth sound which was very cool and "spaced out" but not too fond of the beats. But as an improvisation it was interesting. Cool, right on.

Just want to mention that there's absolutely no need to make anything close to resembling 'professional' pieces here. Take some Robitussin, weed, coffee, transcendental meditation and go wild... the stranger the better.

Everything and anything goers here. No criticisms needed.

Ok, finally got it together Very Happy

One take using MS-2000r, Micro modular (of course) and Kaoss pad 3 Very Happy

Had fun Cool, right on.

Nice and weird audio chaos... cool vox sample. Some good twiddling.

I have a Korg MS2000BR too. I've only used it a total of about eight hours in the past six years, but it's a fun synth. There's actually a VSTi that emulates the MS2000r nicely: SuperWave Tarkus

You can control every CC of the MS2000 hardware straight out of the box with it.

Thanks for joining in the fun.

And for anyone else contributing here please list what you used to create your tracks. Software, hardware, doesn't matter. I just want to know what I listen to was made with.

Cheers for the feedback Subtronik and for this thread Cool, right on.

I take it you´re not too fond of your MS-2000BR then? Or gone mainly software? Confused

The MS2000br sounds a little thin to my ears, and is rack mounted which means I have to get on the floor to play with it. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing with it, but since it's in perfect condition I may trade for some fx units.

Who knows, with my random artistic flow I may put the MS2000br on my desks swing arm table and use that instead of my RM1X.

It's a high quality unit with a lot of features and possibilities to make amazing sounds.

Title: Let Go To Grab Hold
Recorded: 2004
Artists: Patrick Watson, Gideon Marken
Where: my home studio, San Diego, CA
With: a minidisc recorder with a stereo mic
Equip: Patrick - Fender Bass, Crate Bass Amp; Gideon - Fender Strat, Roland Guitar-Midi interface, Line6 TonePort, Novation Nova Synth
Length: 23:43
Size: 17.08mb
Mp3: 96kbps

A drum loop was loaded and a few synth lines and blips were quickly added, as that happened, Patrick started a bass groove, so I hit record and jumped in on midi guitar and off it went. This was fully improvised, no discussion about what would happen, no trial runs, and rarely even looked at each other.

It is quite long, so I suggest downloading it, and getting comfortable Smile

More: Due to the placement of the mic, you can hear the pick hitting the strings. The midi guitar rig I was using was split so you can also hear a guitar tone from my amp. The midi signal was routed to a rackmount Novation Nova, so as I'm playing, I'm occasionally tweaking knobs and changing patches. One of my favorite parts is from 9:30 - 10:00 with the descending run that Patrick picked right up on that dropped right back into the groove. Since this jam, Patrick and I have tried this again once or twice, but haven't hit the magic like this session.

Here are some more...

Title: Phone Jamming
Recorded: 2002
Artists: Gideon Marken
Where: my living room, La Mesa, CA
With: a minidisc recorder with a stereo mic
Equipment: wireless phone, cheap small cassette answering machine
Length: 2:37
Size: 2.51mb
Mp3: 128kbps

This is me playing my phone with my answering machine. Other than the tiny delay at 20 sec and the one right at the end - this recording was not tweaked. While this 'is' an improvisation, I had been practicing this for a few years Very Happy

Title: Passive Aggressive (improvisation)
Recorded: 2003
Artists: Gideon Marken
Where: my living room, San Diego, CA
With: a minidisc recorder with a stereo mic
Equipment: Ovation 6 string, open C tuning
Length: 4:20
Size: 5.20mb
Mp3: 160kbps

I recall I was feeling a bit frustrated on this day, and decided to try and record this feeling using my acoustic guitar. I had recently been experimenting with an open C tuning, which gives the guitar a lower range, but also presents me with having to find new chords to play since the fingering you would use in a standard tuning no longer applies. What I like about alternate tunings, is that is forces you to abandon a lot of what you've learned, and rediscover the instrument. The blend of familiar and unfamiliar creates a perfect dynamic for improvisation.

Title: Selfprovisation 1
Recorded: 2006
Artists: Gideon Marken
Where: home studio, San Diego, CA
With: Sony ACID4
Equipment: Fender Jazz Bass, Fender Strat, Line6 TonePort, percussion instruments, Tabla Drums
Length: 13:58
Size: 13.41mb

An improvised piece of music done in 4 passes. First, I recorded the main guitar part (distortion, heavy reverb, delay). Next, I recorded the second guitar part (sample+hold effect and dynamic filter), which noodles around the main guitar. Next, I plugged in a bass, and added a track, and let it sit for a few days. I realized it needed something else, so I set up a mic and recorded the percussion parts. Influence: 'Dark Star'

Experimenting with random sound generators is fun.

What's with the laughing at the end? Is that you and Lou? It sounds like a 'special' moment.

Quite nice. Like the aggressive guitar playing. Wish I could play, but I'm too lazy to learn Razz

This has a 'storied' feel to it. 4:20 minutes long eh? Wink

Really like the metallic growling distorted parts here. Some of the background noise reminds me of a rainy city alley way.

This actually makes me think of the movie 'The Crow'... which is a compliment.

Nice fat bass too. Everything sits well together, it just has a nomadic feel to it, like Jimi Hendrix playing while doped up.

Really dig the acoustic guitar thing Cool, right on. Reminds me of Led Zep 3 i think Very Happy

Also like the last one, which is well recorded and has a nice psychedelic vibe Very Happy

Cool FX on the guitar and the bass has a soothing effect while the guitars create sonic mayhemLaughingRazz Percussion becomes more frenetic around 7 and as Subtronik suggested Jimi Hendrix (Electric Ladyland) is a good comparison when in it comes to moodCool, right on.

Another late night/early morning iPad/iPod session. I call this one...

The Complexity of Simplicity

Nothing fancy. Just 17:44mins of quietly drifting ambience.

Smokin'!

music...

cheers

Finally found time to listen to this Steve.

I would hear these same type of sounds in my mind, coming down from trips. Sometimes I thought I was hearing them aurally, but the only sound around me was outside street traffic. Maybe the mind processes sound stimuli differently at that point.

Anyway, sounds good. Very relaxing.
