ArtistJukebox is getting an overhaul
Created on: 02/01/07 12:51 PM Replies: 10

I'm redoing ArtistJukebox right now - and finally... it will be like a jukebox. Smile

You'll have access to all kinds of cool streams from ArtistServer - including

- new songs
- new songs by genre
- playlists
- artists (upgraded accounts only)

you can try it out here: http://www.artistjukebox.com/beta/

So far, it's going well - although, I'm finding that if I reload the page several times - or change the playlist too many times that the flash object stops displaying. Most people will not keep refreshing the whole page though - they'll just click on the playlist options on the side.

Once complete - I'll see about making a popup version - so you can launch it, and keep browsing without having that page open the whole time. I'm also starting to think this might work well on the homepage of AS.

Oh - and I haven't tested it with IE7 yet - so if you have IE7, and see a bug or error, let me know Smile

Try it last night using Safari - very nice Cool, right on.

My wife liked the Mona Lisa pic.

thanks Smile

actually that's not the mona lisa - it's this photo Lou took:

It's a statue head of Quan Yin. Lou bought it at an estate sale - it's a great piece, and apparently it's fairly old too.

Works beautifly on my Mac too. Same with on a PC with winXp through Firefox. I've resisted the system nag I get to install IE7. Hmmm wonder what weirdness would ever happen if the site supported other file formats. Porting in ogg would work easy enough I venture, but wma and maybe mov too would be sticky.
The prospect of application on the front page seems right. Maybe another application is to provide code for upgraded listeners and artists to launch from a remote site (with identifier code to prevent abuse). An ability to launch starting with a selected playlist or artist would be good too.

Did you build the update using Flex?
Is the audio file type embedding and launching capability built into Flex?
What adjusts the platform user agent variables?

>>>Did you build the update using Flex?

This is using a Flash Mp3 player that reads XSPF files, can be customized (color, size), and has support for Javascript calls (but not all of it works yet).

The right side is the flash object - and the right side is all xHTML, and some XMLHttpRequest calls in the background to load various listings of playlists. Each one is targeted into a DIV, then each item has a Javascript call to reload the Flash object with the new playlist. I'm supposed to be able to just send the Flash object the new playlist, but I and many others who are trying to use this player are having troubles with the JS calls.

>>Is the audio file type embedding and launching capability built into Flex?

You can create mp3 players like you can in Flash - you can also embed a flash SWF - like an mp3 player, right into your Flex project. Embeding audio into Flex is possible, but you'd only do that for sound efx for clicking, etc. Otherwise, it adds to the filesize and is less flexible.

>>What adjusts the platform user agent variables?

I'm not sure what you mean here. The only platform adjustment, is on the XMLHttpRequest - for IE or FF.

I'd like to support OGG, but it's never been requested, and it would require a fair amount of work and additional storage to support another format. Possibly later on down the road when there's more resources to add this.

Yes, I'd like to offer widgets. Before I can do that, I have to first scale up the mp3 streaming solution, otherwise, such a move could crush the server. I'm looking at Amazon's S3 solution. I'd store a copy of every mp3 there, and use those for all streaming, and the local copy for downloads. Based on current numbers, this would offload 66% of ArtistServer's mp3 serving... for only $49/mo additional expenses. I'm in the middle of building a test to try it out, and should have a better idea in a few weeks. This also gives us a complete backup of all the music uploaded, so it serves two purposes, and should save us a lot money as we grow.

>>>An ability to launch starting with a selected playlist or artist would be good too.

I was considering that - we'll probably add the option to pass what kind of playlist and what playlist ID you want to hear to the player so you can set the default.

Wow, that S3 system is an intriguing development! Your mention is my first introduction to Amazon's exteded web services. I went and started reading about it and all kinds of 'what ifs' where happening. Seems it would help a lot with sudden scaling issues. The bitTorrent support is also attractive. Wonder if those rates will hold.. or even go down!

the songs don't advance in the playlist - that's due to me not passing the file's content length when serving the files. The data I have for the file sizes isn't correct, I have to reindex all the files and capture the real file sizes. Once that's done, streaming should work better - and the issues with Windows Media player should get fixed too.
