anyone ever modify their synth?
Created on: 10/07/07 09:45 PM Replies: 10

hey all
I just bought a Korg Poly 800, and was googling around and found a pretty sweet mod for it, but I have absolutely no experience modfying anything. I found an online service that will do modification, but did anybody have any better suggestions or use sights like -> http://www.muzikelektronix.com/synthmods.html . Anyways, just curious.

No, I haven't done any mods - but I think if you spend a weekend reading up on the topic, pickup the general supplies that are needed, and take your time, that you can do it.

You just have to be EVEN MORE careful than normal since this is an electronic device with a power plug. Actually... the Poly800 also takes batteries, right?

That was the 1st keyboard/synth I picked up. I had NO idea what to do with it, but eventually found myself recording abstract ambient pieces with it.

I did the "moog slayer" mod to a EX800 in 2002. It turned out real good.

Make Magazine is a really good resource for DIY stuff. Their soldering guide is pretty good.

I need to de-solder a dead voice chip in my Juno-106, but need to find a couple cheap (read: inexpensive) chips first.

Practice on some cheapo children's toys from a local second-hand type junk store to get your skills up.

Cool, right on.

(((stereofect))) - You've done that mod, how long did it take, and how much experience did you have?

Seems like from what I've heard it's not terribly difficult, but takes some precision. Anyways, I'm way stoked to try.

I"m also glad to hear other people have/had a Poly 800, and that it can also make abstract ambient pieces

Very Happy

I also had a Poly-800 once....

I did record some tunes with it...the masters must be lying over here somewhere...

Oh, ahh... prob'ly spent a total of about 10hrs over the course of a weekend. Makes a great rainy day project. I used chicken head dials, but I've seen it done with other types. Saw a nice one done using radio type dials. Nice sorta retro fifties kinda look, if you like that sort a thing...

I'd been a solder hack for a while, but it's not too difficult to pick up the habit. Like I said... you may wanna practice on some disposable electronic toyz from the re-store or some similar place first. You know... ta get tha hang of tha de-soldering/soldering thing.

The Moog Slayer is a good mod. The sonic mayhem it's capable of creating is awesome.

Plus... I really like the P800/EX800 series. Great synths they were/are. I'm waiting for a P800MKII to make itself available (read: affordable). Wicked delay when you modulate it using the joystick thingy.

And I've always wanted to make a PAiA Fatman. Just haven't gotten round to it.....

To be honest...I didn't really like my P800, I mean, they sound kinda thin....

The P800MKII is waaaay better sounding, but... yeah.. if it ain't your thing it ain't your thing....

It's like the Juno-106's. I love 'em, but some people have a hard time getting them to sit properly in their mixes. Of course mine is fux'd right now, but my Alpha Juno 1 is a sonically suitable replacement. I just wish I had the programmer to go with it. It would make on-da-fly tweaking so much easier.
