What does "following" an artist achieve ? ... shouldn't we get an alert whenever they release ?

At this point in time, it adds the person to your dashboard, and it adds to your following list on your profile.
At a later date, I'll have a notification system in place that will basically be a customized newsletter for each user - containing updates on people they follow.
I have done a lot of the coding on this, but had to refocus my development time on the mobile site due to all the mobile traffic we started seeing this year. I have to create a version of the site that is optimized for smart phones.
I'm not sure when the newsletter will be completed - so in the mean time, the Dashboard is where you can get all the updates on artists you follow.

yeah ...you've got a lot on your plate... I, myself would do as you and cater for the smart apps.. is it a field your familiar with or is it a 0 point learning curve ? UML can code for anything .. Can you cope with your artists going through the roof...?
