New Turbogeek track - a live improv
Created on: 08/31/09 09:06 AM Replies: 8

A new Turbogeek track - this was created and improvised live using Hexatone on my iPhone. The software is quite original in how it is setup on the screen, and how it functions. In a way, it is a generative sequencer, since you are designing rules and opportunities for sound, yet not directly sequencing those rules or opportunities. You can give more weight to a rule/opportunity, which will cause it to happen more often, and you can edit everything except loading sounds live. It comes w/ 2 effects that you control by rotating the iPhone - you'll see this demo'd in the video down below.

The track is kinda long (10:25) - not too exciting, a bit experimental but still fun to listen to. Enjoy:

Wicked crazy bottom end on that track. What a cool percussion/rhythm setup. I could see some very interesting things coming out of that app. Almost makes me wanna get a iPhone.

Cool, right on.

cheers

thanks for checking it out. Yeah - some good low end Smile It helped that I ran the whole mix into a tube effect that gave the mix a saturated sound.

The app - it's a lot of fun. Makes me wish I had more time to sit around and play with it. It took a few hours of playing around to get a good feel. It's very easy to generate random sounding IDM/glitch with this, and a bit difficult to get a specific groove out of it. The main limitation of the app, is the lack of ability to pitch the samples over time. You can do it w/ your finger per 1 sample over time - but that is just bending it around - not setting up a pitch per each note, etc. It can play from different sections of the sample, so my next experiment will load a bass line as a loop, then have it jump around within that sample. I'm thinking it will come out glitchy though.

Cool, I like it Smile
Very esoteric and arty! Its cool how these apps are getting quite powerful in what they can do. I'm reminded of that Korg app for the DS, though thats quite a bit different to this one.
For me these days I more into the spontaneous and less drawn out and labored tracks, this would be an app for me I reckon... just need to get an I Phone

Cool,

Really nice experiment here Gideon - not something I'd listen to on a daily basis, but fascinating way of making music. Makes me think I should broaden my compositional horizons a little! This is a great way to make a backing track to a tune, I think - this would be really cool if you put melodies and stuff on top, so you had the freeform nature of the track with a 'real' tune with it. I'll be honest, I've never been taken with the whole iPhone thing, but it's excellent that little ideas like this are available, especially when it comes up with such interesting music.

Tell me, what's the difference between Turbogeek tracks and Sonic Wallpaper ones? What defines the artist name? It's just I gave up on separating between aliases a while ago but I've always been interested in what makes people choose them!

Glad to hear from you, and thanks for the listen Smile

I think this app will work best in creating musical passages to fit into a song. So my plan is to take a song that I'm working on, load the samples or some loops into my iphone, and record myself tweaking the beat. Then I'd export it, edit it, and load it into ACID, where I normally work, and blend it into a break down or mid section of a piece.

Turbogeek doesn't make music very often at all, and when it happens, it's usually more experimental than what I do as Sonic Wallpaper. Another way to look at it, is that TG music isn't really serious to me, whereas, SW is. So in this case, I wanted to release the recording, but didn't feel it was of the quality I prefer in my music, so I selected to upload it as TG.

yes!

The Turbogeek project was an experiment back in 2000 I think - nearly all the songs were recorded in a period of a few months. I wanted to see what would happen if I tried starting over, with a different attitude towards the music, and if people would still enjoy it. For me, the experiment was a success, since I was able to crank out a lot of music in a short time, have it sound a bit different than my 'normal' music, and have a small bit of success with some of the releases.

Since then, I have recorded maybe 2 pieces as Turbogeek.

and unfortunately - since then, a few more people with the artist name "Turbogeek" have come into existence.

That's always a pain - I'm constantly fighting last.fm space with a hardcore punk band called Second Thought, and someone who released 12"s called 'Deep Penetration' and the rather charming 'Parlez-Vouz Shit', haha.
