Best Buy under investigation
Best Buy is in some really hot water these days, you might have heard. There are now civil and criminal investigations going into practices at Best Buy, according to the Hartford Courant, which broke the story. It's being reported that Best Buy had a fake Web site in its stores that was charging much higher prices than those found on the Web site accessed from a home computer. Both sites have the name bestbuy.com, but the in-store site was a bait and switch ploy, according to the Courant. When people came in and asked about the lower price they saw on their computer, they were told that the sale ended yesterday. At the worst, this was a criminal act. At the least, it was an extremely foolish move. If there is a legitimate explanation, Clark would love to hear it. But as for now, what the company did is simply despicable. Think seriously about whether you want to shop there from now on.

Ah, the ol' "bait 'n' switch" routine, eh?
Flyers (aka junk mail) are still the method of choice to advertise in this part of the globe. And I always take one with me when looking for something that's specificically advertised. If they don't have what I'm lookin' for, or won't (or claim they can't) get one at the advertised price, I just say "thanks" and leave.
I've never actually been in a Best Buy. We don't have one of those in the town where I live. The only "big box" stores we have are Zellers, Sears and Canadian Tire. Walmart is tryin' to move into town, but the opposition is too great right now, so it looks like it won't happen 'til sometime in the future, if it happens at all.

I bet there's a whole lot more tricks out there too- yet this just flew up and hit the windshield of consumers for the time being.
I've seen stuff with special sale stickers that go up in price when you flip up the sale sign on an item... yet that's an old trick I was taught to watch for. (thanks ma)

oh, for sure...
A department store I worked for (the more you sell the more comission you get) used every trick in the book in order to get you to buy. My boss was the best of the best. He could sell sand to a Bedouin. That three years was life altering for me.

I just whip out my trusty Cingular 8125, which runs Windows Mobile, and log into what ever site Best Buy, Amazon, Circuit City, and show them all the competitors prices, straight from the internet. This usually prompts them to get the manager and then I get a deal.
The best was a 30" Panasonic, they were showing at Circuit City for $1100, but on Amazon it was $900. The manager figured in the shipping and gave it to me for $960. Not bad!
The Best Buy always seemed slimy to me, but now I know for sure. I'm glad they were found out.
