The actual title of this post should read:
The Music Never Stopped: Roots of the Grateful Dead
Since that's what the album title is.....
I've been listening to a lot of blues/roots music lately. It's more of a re-exploration than anything, but a form of musical expression that's never failed to grab my attention. So I'm digging through the delete bin at the local music store and I come upon this lp. (I also came across a Yardbirds lp "Live! Blueswailing July '64" that is f'n amazing, but that's another story). Anyways, turns out this is a 1995 compilation of songs, performed by the original artists, that The Grateful Dead covered. I know nothing about the Grateful Dead, nor what their versions of these absolutely fantastic tracks sound like, but I imagine their treatments would be sincere enough to qualitfy as worthy. Still I can't believe I got this for two dollars. It's a fabulous collection of roots/folk/blues tunes that if you haven't heard of it or are at all curious should pick up if you can find it. Hell it's worth it for the R. Crumb cover alone...

As a bit of a Deadhead, I'll tell you a bit about my favorites from the track listing on that CD - in terms of the version by the Dead:
3. Iko Iko - this is a party song for the Dead, the whole crowd would yell out the lyrics, sang by Jerry
4. Samson & Delilah - this was a great tune - it would start out with this huge sounding tribal drum section. They had two drummers, so together, they would create a huge sound. Sang by Bob.
9. Red Rooster - this one was great to hear live because of the slide guitar playing and great vocal performance by Bob
14. Morning Dew - there are amazing versions of the Dead playing this from every year they performed. Out of all the songs on here, this one is prob my most favorite.
16. Goin' Down This Road Feelin' Bad - which to Heads who collect shows is called, "GDTRFB" - another fun one to hear live.
You can find recordings of all of these songs at Archive.org: http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead
