Christmas at the Pound

I went to our local animal shelter on my lunch break and dropped off warm towels, dog toys and treats in the hopes of bringing a little warmth and fun to the sad pooches this Christmas. It is so cold (yes, even in San Diego) right now, and the pups have only cement boxes exposed to the elements for shelter. As usual, I saw at least three that I wanted to rescue and bring home. The good news is that the shelter wasn't as full as it usually is, which gives me hope that many may have been adopted for the holidays. Some did have sweaters on to fight the cold weather, and others had blankets or boxes with little rugs in them. A few even had toys, so I know I am not the only 'Pound Santa' out there.
So, in an effort shake the blues that always get me after a visit to the animal shelter, I am reminding everyone out there to 'rescue, don't buy' a pet, and keep in mind that all local animal shelters will gladly accept donations of any kind. I know many of us don't have an extra nickle to spare right now, but you might have a few old towels or blankets hanging around your house that you don't use. How about a box of animal treats that your pet just didn't like? Or a few toys they didn't really play with? Take them to the pound! You could bring a moment of comfort or joy to an animal that may not have had much of that lately.
Happy Holidays to all....man and beast alike, all creatures great and small.
