My studio gets IO upgrade
Created on: 05/05/07 01:32 PM Replies: 2

The io I was waiting for finally arrived (sorry earth for all the pollution created in transport just to satisfy corporate greed and feed a few more Chinese citizens) This is a firewire connected mix input output. It is a nice compact unit the size of a thick book. Easy 8 in and out plus adat inputs to raise the number more than twofold. next task for me is to optimize my Sonar platform (a questionable mission on a business machine Dell 4700)

wow... 8ins!

But the real question is, can the PC handle recording 8 channels at once Smile

Looks like a great unit. I've always liked Alesis products. I used to have a Quadrasynth, an SR16 and an ADAT - all solid products.

have you previously done your mixing live down to stereo, then into your PC?

Most of my hardware based tracks are done that way.

Previous input methods include M-Audio FW410 and Tascam 1884. The 410 was a vast improvement over various cards and breakout boxes I used previous. I managed on several occasions to pipe 4 channels direct from instrument to computer but that was rare mainly because I had to keep moving and changing my set-ups due to severer space restraints. I oh too briefly was in the process of setting up a studio outside of my house in a commercial building where for some various technical labor I exchanged to get use of room at night. I purchased the Tascam to take a "professional" approach and had some learning sessions on it, but alas, the doctor I was doing the exchange with had a serious reversal in the practice that was being set up and I lost the space. So I had to pack it all up and the 1884 sat stored atop my refrigerator for two years. When I built my music shed last summer I brought out and set up the Tascam but I constantly had problems with it dropping the firewire connection. After checking my setup and connections and then reading various user forums I found that there is probably a bad intermittent connection with the firewire control chip on the 1884. Various solutions were suggested and I tried them but the work around seemed way too much hassle for having spent $1200 USD. Since so much time had passed the warranty is expired and the closest service company is 100 miles away so I figure for the moment this Alesis is cheaper than the repair. Plus I hope I might get lucky and e able to use the adat out off the 1884 and input into the Alesis 26i|o. To answer your quesion I've most always recorded direct to computer except for a time i used a Korg D12. The D12 is good but the interface was hard to see and as you get older those kind of things can be important. I will note here one of the attraction of the Alesis 26i|o was the inputs on top (instead of through the back), the spacing and size of the knobs (though I think I do prefer faders).
