Give one defining moment in your life...

...big or small that ultimately lead you down the path you are currently treading, or helped mold you into the person you now are.
This topic came up recently at a dinner with friends. We were sharing funny stories, crazy things we did when we were younger, and I remembered a moment from my middle-school years that I wanted to share. Looking back, I realized that so much of who I am today began at that moment. It made me wonder what interesting stories or moments my family and friends might recall if I asked them a similar question. So now I am posing it to you...
My defining moment:
I'm in 7th grade. My family does not have a lot of money and most of my clothes are either handmade or hand-me-downs. I'm nervous and shy and I'm not making friends very easily. I've been spending my lunches at a table of girls, all my peers, but no one I would consider a 'friend'. I had begun to notice the nastiness, the backstabbing and petty comments that seem to come naturally to some girls. Whenever one of us would get up from the table to get something (food, books, another drink...) the rest of the girls would verbally rip them to pieces. Comments on their clothes, their weight, their social status...all was fair game. One day I looked around the table and asked everyone "What do you say about me when I walk away from the table?" They became instantly pissed.
I took this as my sign to leave. I had been observing the other students, how they socialized so easily, and some even appeared to be having fun. I wanted this myself. I grabbed my tray, said 'good bye' and walked right over to an 'all boys' table. And these weren't just any boys, mind you, these were....GEEKS! Yes, God bless them, geeks. Honor Roll, debate club, Latin class, you name it. I introduced myself and asked if I could join them. I took their universal silence as acceptance.
After that school was much easier. My new friends taught me so much! I learned a little Latin, discovered the Beatles and Monty Python's Flying Circus, and eventually was introduced to the wonderful world of A D&D. I also learned a lot about life from those guys. I experienced my first 'death' when one of them died of hypothermia during the winter holiday. I experienced my first kiss from another. Two of them I am still friends with over twenty years later.
All in all it may have seemed like a small thing at the time, but in retrospect, I know I would not be who I am, where I am or what I am today if I had not picked up my lunch tray and squeezed onto that bench.
Sorry for all the writing, it must be 'Introspection Wednesday' in San Diego.
So enough about the boys....how about you? What's your moment?

1982 - Hallowe'en Party - I was my D & D character, a chaotic good cleric; just after midnight I first lay eyes on Faith - she dressed in some kind of 50s era poodle skirt cheerleader outfit. Love at first sight.

July 14, 1986.
The day my first son was born. All the excitement and anticipation leading up to the big day was nothing compared to the moment when I was handed my son, swathed in nice, cozy, warm blankets, a little tuque on his head and then just sitting there, holding him in my arms, looking at him, his little fist gripping my index finger, amazed that he was actually there and just being blown away by the whole experience. It was quite a trip.
Seeing all four of my sons being born was a heady experience for sure, and definitely something I will never, ever forget, but the first one is definitely a defining moment.

Ah yes....love at first sight! You gotta love that. And babies! Yep. I can see how that would change your life. It's funny, but all it takes is that one moment and suddenly there is no going back.
Thanks for showing us just how hopelessly romantic you both are!
