warning: totally self-indulgent garden pics
Created on: 12/05/06 10:14 AM Replies: 5

yes, obscene self-indulgence follows:

pretty stoked at how well our winter garden is doing! at this time last year (our first attempt at over-wintering) all we had to show for it was some tiny seedlings that weren't mature plants until mid-February.

this year, we built a new (big!) cold frame and got our seeds in on time. plus we had the benefits of late summer/fall plants leftover and still going, and a pretty good fall harvest. damn deer ate most of our broccoli and kale, but a lot of it came back early in the fall.

the new 12'x6' cold frame was built entirely from salvaged materials (and it looks it!). The frame is made from pallets that I busted apart...pallets that came from the dance floor we built for the wedding. Actually, all the screws also came from the dancefloor...I took that thing apart screw by screw and saved all the wood. then after a couple of phone calls I managed to find a window and glass company in town that had a bunch of old storm windows that they were just going to throw away. the pallet walls are stuffed with straw, an excellent insulator.

anyway, just very excited to be eating loads of fresh greens already in December. it has been relatively mild, but we're still getting down into freezing temps over night, and most mornings there is a good frost. these plants should be tastey until February or so, but by then the next crop will be ready...Erika got those seeds in a couple of weeks ago. not pictured in the following photos are our mature carrot plants, and beet seedlings (and several other seedlings that have sprouted from the new plantings).

pics!

Loved them! Loved them! Loved them!
Of course, what I really want to do is EAT them!!! Laughing I just finished reading my list of 'must plants' for San Diego in December, so I'm anxious to get my hands in the dirt, too.
I'm jealous of your garlic...what are you going to do with almost 200 heads of garlic? Dry it and braid it? Save it to use all year long? When are you and the missus going to have all of us over for dinner, eh? Razz I want to try your kale.

Thanks for sharing. As always, Doof, your garden is an inspiration. Cool, right on.

Holy mackeral- that's some serious growing... Great work; but are you actually going to eat all of your babies? jk Razz Impressive job on salvaging those windows AND building a great structure, they seem to have nothing wrong with them at all...
Cool, right on.

I like to grow sunflowers & peas... & tadpole shrimp. Ummm... what?

Eat it, of course! Last season we planted 100 or so cloves and we've just finished eating the last of them. We figured if 100 planted gave us enough garlic for about 1/2 a year, 200 should get us off the garlic grid for 2007! We love garlic. We lost some last year at the end of the season due to a mold, but we hadn't treated the cloves before planting them. This year we learned of an organic method...soak the cloves in baking soda & water for a few hours, then shell 'em and soak them in alcohol for a few minutes, right before putting them into the ground. Also, this year we only planted the larger outer cloves. Last year we didn't know any better, and planted even the small inner ones. Even though we only doubled the planted amount, we expect to more than double the yield, weight-wise.

Ya'll should know you have a standing invite to spend as much time as you like with us at our place out here Smile

mmm, peas. we grew sunflowers over the summer, they did alright. they were sort of a last minute thought...they look nice, and they helped attract birds, who in turn ate tomato worms and squash bugs. then for the wedding, we cut down the two tallest ones and tied a long red ribbon to each, and had our moms carry them in the procession like long sceptres Very Happy

Thanks for the compliments, you two.

I'm not much of a veggie eater myself, but what you've got goin' there looks good. Just a nice sized little plot to work with.

Cool, right on.

cheers
