How do you handle unwanted compliments?

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm truly stumped. I was curious how some of you have handled similar situations.
How do you tell the difference between someone just being nice or someone pushing the envelope? What about when it's work related?
I just had a client call me. He wants to come by and pick up some paperwork. I work alone, however, I have a nice office in a safe place, so usually I'm not worried. But this time I didn't like the 'tone' on the other end of the phone.
Bottom line: What he said to me made me feel uncomfortable. He's my client. He pays his bills on time. What do I say? What would you?

Maybe Gideon could be there when the guy comes for the paperwork?
I wish I could give you advice, but people confuse me, so I'm not very good at stuff like this.

I think you should consult your boss and ask what the company policy is for handling such things. I'm sure there's a few ways to say "back off" in a nice manner.
I'd just say, "While personal compliments are kind, it's best to not offer them in a business relationship. Compliments and feedback on our work is much more appropriate."

I did tell the big, burly airplane dudes in the office next to me that I had a client coming over, and that they should listen for my screams. That was fun! But no need to worry, he is gone now, with paperwork in hand. Mission accomplished! I did notice that he could not look me in the eye while he was here, so he must no he crossed a line and feels guilty about it. Grrrrrrr...

I would judge by actions. (Do you have pepper spray btw?)

No pepper spray or stun gun...both of which I would like.
I did talk to my boss about it and he said that from now on I can meet all of my clients 'off site' and somewhere public. Yea!
Thanks again for your input. Many minds are better than one...or none.

If Leanne were in a similar situation, I would insist on it (as would she). No sense putting yourself in harm's way, right?
Glad everything worked out OK.

Along the same lines as the pepper spray (defending yourself), it's probably a good idea to study some kind of martial art, assuming you don't already do so, which you very well might. If all that someone is doing is complimenting you over the phone, then that's at most a psychic / emotional / social injury. But if someone were ever to do something physically... well, let's just say that pepper spray might not be enough.

You're right, of course...I should take a few lessons. It's been years since I've done anything like that. I tend to 'fight' more than 'flight', so it might be good to know what I'm doing.
