Wild Parrots of San Diego - we just saved one!
Created on: 09/28/07 08:16 PM Replies: 9

We saved a wild parrot about 2hrs ago! (we have a few wild flocks of parrots in San Diego)

A hawk flew through the flock as if flew over Lou and I, and i'm not sure if he got one, but he did bite the wing of one and almost took him down. They continued over our house and onto the next canyon.

Less than 10min later, I hear a bird squawking like crazy outside. Lou and I run out the front door, and found a Conure in a neighbors tree.

Right as I got there, he fell out of the tree and ONTO my arm... amazing! oh yeah!

He panicked, then tried to fly away and ended up coasting for 10ft. I then ran up, tore off my sweatshirt and placed it over him and scooped him up gently.

I think he was in shock - but seemed physically ok (no blood).

It's now in a dog kenel/cage in the garage with some towels, sunflower seeds, water and a piece of banana.

So far, it won't eat and is sitting in the corner, but does respond and seems like he'll be fine. I was able to scratch him under the wing, and he didn't take a bite at me.

We'll keep him for the night and come up w/ a plan tomorrow. Hopefully it will be fine in the AM and we'll let him fly. Otherwise, we have a Wildlife control number to call.

We'll try to snap a photo and post it later.

Wow! What a morning! Very Happy

Papagayo (as I named our new house-guest) made it through the night with 'flying colors'...pun intended. Wink

We awoke early to the sound of parrots flying over our house. Gideon jumped up and ran straight for Papagayo and brought the temporary cage outside. He heard the parrots flying over the neighborhood and started calling to them. Once they heard him they made a hard turn and came straight to our yard. As soon as they landed in our Brazilian Pepper tree the squawking really began!

It was obvious Papagayo wanted to join the remaining three of his flock, he was flapping his wings and showing real interest in the other parrots. Gideon realized he needed some assistance finding the opening of the cage, so he reached in and guided him out with his hand. In an instant....swhooooooosh! He was off! And all four swooped through the yard and out into the canyon. Lovely!

We were both in tears. The last photo I clicked is just a blur of green feathers. Smile Our neighbor had come out to see was all the noise was about. He had never seen wild parrots before. Overall, it was a very emotional and lovely experience...and all of this before 8am or coffee! Not bad!

We'll post a few pics in a bit. Right now I need my first cup of joe.

When I was younger I remember trying to save a baby bird, I think it was a Robin. Later I kept having reoccuring dreams about having a very special "bird friend" that talked to me. I think it was my friend because I saved it in my dream. I always wondered why I kept having the same visitor in my dreams and what it meant. It wasn't until recently that I realized that the bird friend in my dreams represented a very important and special friend that I have in real life.

I only made the connection when I was worried for and stressed out and thinking about my friend, and scary images of a damaged bird kept popping up when I closed my eyes. The first image I saw nearly scared me to death, it was like the feeling you get from waking up from a nightmare, except I had only closed my eyes.

That's the only time I've ever had a dream that was symbolic and I figured out what it meant.

So I can imagine the amazing feeling you have, because the thought of saving a wild bird was always a great and special thing in my mind.

They do fly around quite often...but not all the time; it may be a seasonal thing. I know they like all of the fruit trees in our area. They make a wonderful racket and we normally see them in flocks of four to twelve. It's always nice to see that bright flash of green in the sky.

When I was a kid my parents wanted to catch one of the wild parrots and try to tame it. They read that you could soak fruit in wine and then put it on a cookie sheet up on your roof. The parrots (supposedly) would come and eat the fruit, get drunk and be unable to fly, and thus enabling you to catch one. It didn't work. All they got were bits of wine laden dried fruit. Rolling Eyes I was always rootin' for the parrots, anyway. Cool, right on.

This latest adventure did have an especially nice ending, I must admit. I wish we could start every day like that.

ah a parrot bumped into my window a couple of months ago.. it somehow had escaped.. so i went on the street while my sister got the bird (she not only is a bird as the uk guys would say, but she's good with birds, has one) anyway.. so i found some neighbour in the next street who was looking for the parrot. his neighbour was the owner.. which turned out to be a crying woman (about 35 years of age) who kept saying the parrot was her baby.
very sweet and sentimental scene as you can imagine. Smile

then i went back to watching Festen. Razz (a very emotional Danish film, well known obviously)
and after that I watched one my best friends winning a very intellectual dutch tv quiz. hah! i was very proud of him. so i'll post a picture. (it was in the newspaper too.. well a free tabloid but heck who cares)

(the guy on the far right obviously)

Laughing Yeah, that one, it´s a good film, love the tension and then the chaos after the speech is finally made. Very Happy
