Strings + pianos.

Those of you who follow my Twitter will be aware I've been working on some piano/string arrangements. An album I should be releasing this year draws on a lot of neoclassical and avant-garde influences, but these tracks use Edirol Orchestral which is nice but still sounds a bit like... well, an orchestra synth - which works ok with the other synths, but the tracks I'm writing at the moment are just going to be piano/strings, so I'd like to step up the quality. But don't have access to a studio, can't play piano very well and don't have a string quartet handy.
So, what can people recommend for good, realistic string and piano sounds? Synths? Sound fonts? Samples?
I know I'm probably asking for the moon on a stick here, but it's the one forum I'm on where I felt someone might have a decent response.

I'll check my sample collection for some that I know are not from a commercial CD of samples. I used to own a quadrasynth many years ago, and I believe I sampled some strings and piano notes. Otherwise, you may want to check ebay for used sample CDs and get a proper set of piano samples. That way you'll get short and long notes, as well as different dynamics. For strings - I bet a good VSTi would do the trick - just add some chorus and reverb to smooth it out.

Mmmm, I was really hoping it wouldn't come to samples - it's quicker to load a synth and they're more versatile, obviously. But I've yet to come across a decent piano synth. They must be out there somewhere though, surely? I shall look for samples.
Yes, strings I imagined would be easier. Anyone any recommendations for the best 'uns out there?

Ah yes, I was looking there earlier. Going to download some of them and see what's good. I was thinking of searching for some free VSTs so that thread came to my rescue!

Audjoo Helix
This was the free version right before they realized how much people liked it and started charging $149.00. I made sure to keep a personal copy available.
