Created on: 05/02/07 07:36 AM Replies: 8

Hiya, folks. I've been thinking about the genre my music is. It don't really know if it really fits in 'ambient', so I wanted to ask if you guys could say wether I should move it to another one, or not.

Appreciated Very Happy,

Malcolm Humes said in his 1995 essay "What is Ambient Music"...

Quote:
ambient now is almost as coopted a term as "new age" or "progressive", "electronic" or "fusion" has come to be - a catch-all that is so generally sweeping and yet personally subjective that it's now almost as meaningless as "alternative". But it still seems to serve as a beacon and useful handle by which folks can branch out from the familiar into the unfamiliar.

So in terms of todays standards, your music is fine where it is.

And it's good too.

I have a similar dilemma with regard to genres. I've listened to quite a bit under the ambient flag and think to myself "that's not ambient", your stuff included (not to say I don't like it). I've always thought of ambient as having no solid beats or rhythms.
I can't believe the number of genre's here and also find it difficult to catagorize the noises I produce. So to make life easy for myself I class my stuff in 2 ways. No sequences/beats = ambient. Sequences/beats = electronica. Smile
The whole genre debate can be a very touchy subject though. I was in one forum where the thing turned into the biggest flame war. They actually shut the place down for a week and allowed everyone to lay into each other as much as they wanted and then re-opened with a ban on anyone ever mentioning the word 'genre' again. We don't have Genre Police here, so yes, you'll find songs that are not where they should be.

My suggestion to people, is to email the artist and make a suggestion. Often, the artist didn't know what genre to use.

I've been at this whole online music thing since 98 or 97, and after releasing more than 100 tracks online, I still have a hard time selecting the right genre.

I think that's where 'tags' come in - they allow you to create your own genre. While your tags don't show up as genres on the site, we do allow people to browse by them - offering an alternative to genres.

Ambient has several sub genres - and as soon as that happens, the parent/root genre becomes a blend of all those sub genres. So today, Ambient can be quiet a range of things.

To me Ambient is basically what Eno said...

"Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

I like that description because it doesn't even touch musical attributes, like beat or melody - it focuses on the relationship between the music and the listener. That relationship and how it functions is the key to Ambient music.
