I just bought a Presonus Firebox as my new sound card. My old card blew up months ago, (following an awesome recording session,) so my music making as been held up for the past couple months without a good sound card. I've been just listening to music on the built-in motherboard sound card, and I hate it. The performance on it isn't even good enough to do editing in Cinelerra. Argh!
I plan on switching my workstation for a laptop in a few months, so I wanted to get a cheap firewire sound card, instead of a PCI card. I also wanted one that would run perfectly on Linux. I ended up with the Presonus Firebox:
Note that the headphones go up to 11.
It hasn't arrived yet, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Looks cool Knell.
I'm using the 'Samson C-control - Control Room Matrix':

I love technology.

congrats on the new gear - having a good audio I/O solution makes such a difference.
I'm currently using a Line 6 GearBox for my recording and monitoring:

It has some great amp modeling, effects, etc. it's just that they made the interface poorly, you can't create or addon 3rd party effects (you can only buy more from them), and they don't give you VST access to the effects and amp models - they selected to break it out into a different product which costs approximately the same as the original unit+software... lame.
I was previously using the Tascam US428 for the last few years - which has been a great unit, but I never needed the channel faders. I have this unit for sale if anyone is interested. It's in mint condition and still has the original box and manual.

I'm returning it.
The driver support on Linux is just too flaky. The "Freebob" project only had their first stable release in October, and I'm disappointed with it. The Firebox is on their list of supported cards, but I could never keep Jack running properly. And even if I could, firewire audio isn't supported by ALSA at all right now.
I really would have liked to simply picked up a nice PCI card, such as the M-audio Delta 66 or 1010LT, but I plan on moving to a laptop in 2 months, so I want to buy something that can will work with a new laptop.
So now I'm trying again with the Lexicon Omega - it's USB instead of firewire, and it's on Alsa Project's list of supported cards.
However, I did try out the Firebox on a Windows box for a few hours, and I was pretty impressed from that little voice-recording session. It's still pretty impressive. In a few months, I'll bet the driver situation will be fixed up in a few months, but I don't want to wait, and I definitely don't want to have new gear that I can't use laying around here.

Hey, it's reassuring to hear that you like the Omega, man. I haven't heard very much about Lexicon's cards, but I know that everything else they make has been great.
