Do you think this will work?
Created on: 06/17/07 03:48 PM Replies: 4

I've been working on this project for a while now, and i was hoping to get some feedback from internet users with an interest in music.

We've called it Oomix and it's kind of a social networking site but for actual online musical collaboration. Basically a musician would sign up, upload some of their tracks or samples, and get mixing, right there and then with our online mixer. Their tracks would be available to all the other members to use for their tunes if they want and vice versa.

The idea is simple enough - mixing music with like-minded individuals and communities - and the timing seems to be right, what with this new social networking phenomenon. I've been working on the project for so long now I'm worried that I've lost my perspective a bit. We have all these grand dreams of people making really cool music and finding new ways of interacting and stuff and Oomix becoming the next big thing, but what do you guys think? Do ya reckon it's got legs? Can you foresee any problems we might come across or have any ideas that would help us?

Hi -

My name is Gideon, I'm the Admin/Site Owner here at ArtistServer.com

I have a few years experience in running community based sites focused on music, and thought you might benefit from a few questions I think you should be asking yourself.

=============================

1. do you know your competition?

2. have you joined your competitor's site's to learn from them?

3. what makes your site/solution better or worse than your competition?

4. are people using the competitors sites? why?

5. were your competitors funded by investors, and do you plan to seek investors?

6. do you already have the mixing tool created? in Flash?

7. if you are targeting musicians, why do you feel they would want to use a browser based mixer instead of their own software?

8. do you have people beta testing your work, or at least non-programmers and non-designers participating?

9. how do you plan to get people to start joining, filling an empty site isn't easy without a marketing/pr budget?

10. how will you cover all the expenses?

11. if you are expecting to earn your revenue from banner and text ads, what do you expect to pull in each month?

12. there's a lot of data and media transfer happening in what you describe, do you have experience with large scale Web applications and high availability systems?

13. do you have the time to work two jobs?

===========

I'm sure that answering these questions won't be fun, but I can tell you from experience, that you need to keep asking yourself these questions as you grow your plans. Things change, the original idea may need shaping by many people and users, and the reality of expenses and time will truly define your progress.

Can you do it? Yes - you can do anything! Smile Cool, right on.

ArtistServer was designed, launched and administrated by one person over the last 6+ years. It was done with no money invested, and to this day, it continues to run very well with zero money in the bank, no staff, no salaries, no corporate office, and no executives. Granted, it's not breaking even, but it is growing, revenue and traffic are up and I'm adding new features every few months. I'm sure if I was 'money hungry', then yes, the site would break even, but I tend to be more 'fun hungry' and am more concerned about creating a great experience for those who use the site.

Good luck with the site - keep us posted on your progress Smile

I think it's almost impossible to produce a site that has so many extra new features that it would be totally different from what's on the net already....

So....why would people even visit this new site?

Consider also what investors may be looking for. Listen for example to what Reid Hoffman (founder or investor in several social network websites) has to say about his involvement.

"Reality leaves a lot to the imagination, but crossing the road with your eyes closed is easy" -John Lennon - “What relates to reality, is not certain; and what is certain, is not real.” --Albert Einstein

Personally I like the idea (as an artist).

On the other hand I'm always weary of what seems to be a pipe dream.

So basically the concept is that members upload unfinished music to be used in your community?

If so I'd contribute. Good luck.
