Rant of the Year
Created on: 01/31/12 09:54 AM Replies: 11

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH musical tastes, i swear i cannot figure out how some tracks get such high marks. This may sound like sour grapes but without mentioning names, theres a track at no1 on a certain genre which is utter cak, how it got there god only knows. It bugs the hell out of me when i go out of my way to make a multi parted melodic tune that flows and ebbs and then some chump comes along and basically shits one out of his sequencer and bam its no 1.

Oh yeah and people who upload loads of tunes at once, really winds me up too

Makes me wonder why i bother Anger - grrrrrr!

Rant over

I'm sorry that I don't have a better means to generate a chart than basing it off of streams and downloads. I know we could sit here and chat about ways to capture when someone REALLY likes a song, but to be honest, it is quite difficult getting people to post feedback of any type. It makes sense though - if you think about the process of clicking around the site trying different songs out. Clicking on a song, you have no idea if it will rock or suck but on the back end, I'm tracking that click.

What is worse.... is the 'chart effect' - whereby songs on the chart are listened to simply because they are on the top of the chart. This creates a situation where a song can get stuck on the top of the charts for months.

To help with this situation, I don't use overall totals when generating stats - they are always based on the last 30 days. Any song activity 31 days or more out is not considered.

Lastly, our charts are now heavily skewed towards the population of users who are visiting our iphone site, as they are by far the largest collection of users we have - and they tend to have similar tastes in music.

I hope that you are being heard Smile

If it's any consolation, for my part, I never find the best songs at the top of any charts, and while I do look to see who is getting lot's of downloads, I find all the best music is -always- buried treasure, though I recognize the general public presumes the top downloads also to be the best music/artists.

A solution to this would be to have an option for a site-groomed chart, much like playlists serve as, where someone familiar with the community and listening to the new music literally selects all tracks which are the most highly appealing, and presents an altruistic, yet groomed chart.

I remember the discussions at the former mp3com about this, and many artists said there needs to be a groomed chart, where poor quality songs at the top of the chart can reflect unfavorably on all the other (better) artists buried in the haystack, and many try the top few songs, and then just leave a site, thinking that "if that is the best they have, I am outta here".

This site contains utterly phenomenal music, and a feature I would like to see on the artist pages is "This Artist Recommends:" where we can promote one another, and lift the best artists and thus also invest in developing connections and collaboration between artists who admire one another's work. Artists one is following is similar, but does not necessarily imply one admires or is promoting their work, and it's a little hidden out of the way at this site... It's marked "Followers" at the top of each artist page, -but also shows who one is following- which is a form of recomendation.

All the artists listed on my "Following" list are the best I have found at ArtistServer.com (Click Here to View).

I find the best references for music at any site comes from the artists who make the music I like best, and where any artist I like recommends others, I usually always check them out, as a short-cut to the treasure, and rarely am I disappointed.

Just my thoughts on the matter...

Thanks for the informed words guys, I understand that its mighty difficult getting people to listen to the buried treasure as youve put it, but ive certainly noticed since the explosion of "i" traffic last year that it seems whoevers uploaded most recently i.e. on top of the front page, will get the most hits. Ive obviously noticed this myself recently and am fighting to try and find a time to upload that is going to maximise exposure. However this isnt how it should be.

Which is why im increasingly leaning towards having a proper subscription so that i can maybe have a bit more exposure on the legit side of things, as it were.

Alluding to my initial rant though, i still find it truly annoying to see tripe rise to the top, however now that ive calmed down a bit since that post, i know theres only one way to compete and thats to sit at the keyboard and figure out something special to upload.

All you need to cheat the charts is a laptop and aircard. You can randomly change you IP in seconds and gain pop tarts as your fanbase.

But.. sweet justice wins in the end because if your music sucks, you're really only wasting time and effort, with zero payout.

Im pretty sure, some people cheat the charts, its just got to be the answer, especially with some total dross i hear doing well on the charts. Alas poor Yoric ive failed in my duties to rid the world of country music, jazz, RnB, and the worst of the lot Hip Hop.

Crap musicians will always cheat the charts because they have no other way of doing it legitimately.

>>>Im pretty sure, some people cheat the charts, its just got to be the answer, especially with some total dross i hear doing well on the charts

I'm sorry, but I do not agree. I've been at this for 10 years now, I've spent a lot of time over the years looking at the traffic to music, as I track all of it and store it in a database. I have caught maybe 4-5 people trying to cheat over the years.

What I explained earlier is what you are seeing. I think this isn't making sense to you because you are not seeing the overall numbers to the site and the music. To help you see my explanation as valid, please consider these numbers for the last 30 days...

Mobile Users:
Visits: 641,234
Page Views: 2,734,188

Web Users:
Visits: 21,261
Page Views: 66,909

So there are 2.7 million page views in 30 days from mobile devices, and those users are hitting the site, and focusing on the following:

* Songs in the charts
* Songs that were just uploaded
* Songs in the Hip Hop genres

Web users are more often looking for indie music, explore electronic genres, and drills down further into the site.

As you can see, a consideration of ratio explains the situation. As the Mobile users diversify, they'll seek more genres, but I think that they'll still focus on new songs and songs that are already in the charts.

BTW Swerve Tweeter - it is nearly impossible for you to do well in the charts on ArtistServer because you keep deleting your songs. If the traditional account upgrade is out of your budget, there is now a smaller package for only $25/yr.

Well Gideon that certainly puts it into perspective, im wondering whether because of the increased traffic and consequent word of mouth. That the sites had an upsurge of new artists, it certainly seems that way from what ive seen lately.

Ofcourse thats a good thing for everybody.

Only reason ive deleted recent tracks is because as soon as i upload something someone uploads 10 on top of mine and it has little or no chance of any exposure thusly making it frustrating and pointless. Especially when one artist uploaded about 7 of those, but hey it cant be helped.

I think within your answer, i have to point out the words 3 or 4 people caught cheating. Ive noticed people uploading tunes that are remixes of established artists many times on here without anything happening to them, i realise its a tough job to police the site on your own, but lets agree to disagree that cheating goes on, it does, its just not noticed.

Thanks for the considered replies G.

I'm disappointed that my perspective on 'chart cheating' has yet again been shot down wholeheartedly by the owner of this site.

I've been in this scene for over 15 years and remember the days of mp3.com artist doing something similar by having online friends play their tracks on repeat to push them to the top of the charts.

It's epidemic in my eyes... that's why I gave up long ago with ideas of getting signed because of how bullshit the music industry is in general.

If anyone doubts me about chart cheating, just have me prove it. I can make anyone of my tracks hit number one within a week by cheating Wink

My responses have only been to Swerve Tweeter in this thread, I haven't replied to you. I can see how that wasn't clear since I didn't write his name at the top of my post.

ArtistServer puts more effort into thwarting cheaters than most sites that have ever had a chart. Most have not had any filtering - they just count traffic - why? Because it creates more hype. Can you cheat - sure, you can keep changing your IP, then stream, and download - then change your IP again, etc. I think you are not recalling that we already discussed this, and I had agreed that it was possible to cheat.

I've tried to help convey how the charts work in this thread, as well as provide information to specifically explain the chart behavior in the last year. My suggestion to everyone, is that if you don't like the main chart, move down to a genre level chart, and if you don't like that, then ignore the charts - as they are only charting downloads.

Hmm, guess I'm taking too many psychoactives... or I'm simply PISSED in general about chart cheaters because I totally thought your comments were directed at me Gid.

Sorry, and I'll drop the subject permanently.
