Fiona's Last Stand
Created on: 10/10/06 10:50 AM Replies: 20

I just added the finalized version of my last piano song, called Fiona's Last Stand, to my myspace page. This version features a better mixdown with clearer drums, and a better bridge/modulation section back to the main theme, which is more musically effective.

Wow, that was quick Cool, right on.

OK. It's uploaded to AS, on the top of my page. Please do comment because this is absolutely my personal favourite achievement as a musician so far, or at least one of them. It's crossover on so many levels music...

Fantastic... Love it! Insanely sane. Wink

i'll check it out later Smile

I really, really like this one. Good composition, clear, simple sound, fluid transition into the (lovely) drill rush. How was the piano recorded? Live or meticulously sequenced?

Listening again right away...

strange, i can't get it to play.. i can play the corner song.. but not this one..
Confused
crazy

Thanks guys. The piano is a soundfont loaded into Kontakt. Most of the playing is actually played in rather than sequenced, but some of the left hand stuff is just drawn in because I suck at playing runs and 16th note accompaniments accurately. It's really a whole mishmash of layered midi recording, editing and note shifting the manually drawn parts to give a live feel. I worked a lot on the velocities as well since I hate flat piano playing.

Ludo - Read the thread Very Happy. It's on AS. Myspace is too buggy to be dealt with right now.

Sendy, I don't know if i commented on this in the last bulletin board, but this new mix sounds very good IMHO. Fixing the mixing of the drums was a huge improvement, it's really quite nice. I was wanting to hear some cutting and filter effects with the piano too, but thats nit picky, maybe that would get to be too much, but anyways, very top notch track, production sounds nice, even on Myspace, so kudos to you. I also like the other track you have up there a whole lot, the corner song. All in all, nicely done.

Thanks, Erik! I wanted the piano to sound like a piano and almost in a way like it was seperate from the electronic stuff. Like two performances side-by-side that mesh together, if that makes sense WTF? .. Had I cut it around like the drums are it would have started to lose it's own space... I think...

And really I'm trying to cut down on the crazy filters because I really went as far in that direction as I could with "Voidbreaker" which is really layer upon layer of destructive editing Very Happy . I will get back to going mad with the filters but I'm reintroducing it bit by bit to my composition and I'm trying to get it less 'arbitrary' and more like it's part of the composition, kind of thing.

Such lofty goals, it's a wonder I get anything done Rolling Eyes

It's a bitchin track Smile

My only issue with it is the drums seem a bit too filtered out or too quiet.

I'm picturing this as a father and son in an old victorian like home (high cielings) ... the father playing away at the piano, and the son in the next room twisting the beats... as it builds the whole house crashes down leaving the two of them, the piano and the computer in a cloud of dust.

hopefully you're in a good mood and can see the humor in this, I mean no harm, just being honest as usually I'm way into your music Smile

I've listened to this one many times and it's just not doing anything for me. I guess I don't get the pseudo-classical flavor. It starts to shape up for me a little bit at the end, when the piano fluttering subsides and the drums and synths come to the foreground, but the rest of it sort of sounds to me like it should be on an insurance commercial, or business consulting ad spot - sort of been a trend here...like so:

okay, press play...

halfway through the intro:

now, wait until the drums kick in before scrolling to the next set of photos:

then the drums kick in...

then wait for the conclusion:

Laughing I love the piano dynamics in Fiona. Although I do believe that this tune hits a specific "genre" of so to say; progression. To put my finger on it, I'd say it's like walking around corners and seeing everything around you etc. Busy sounding- then back into the calm. Example: driving to the bank in town and then stepping out of your car door when the drums come in- walking into the doors of the building; calm again- back outside into traffic to finish the rest of your errands etc... It's a lovely tune. Smile
