hey friends,
haven't been much of a poster lately, but things have definitely been going on, and that has had me pretty distracted. but all good stuff!
first up, there is this one project that has been in the works since early November. I've been tight-lipped about it for superstition's sake (it has been hard!), but now that the deal is sealed I feel like I can let ya'll know that we just bought a house!
but, true to form, it's going to take some work and personalization. and when I say personalization I mean renovation. and when I say work I mean the place is gutted. hehe. awesome.
the house was built in 1932 and it sits on 7 acres of land about a mile or less from the foot of the blue ridge mountains. it's west of where we've been renting for the past year and a half. it was quite the battle and test of patience to finally get this place, but last night we closed, made it official.
the renovation will happen in four stages, we think. there's the initial work that needs to be done so we can move in. the house has been sitting uninhabited for at least three years. it needs a bathroom (entirely...from joist reenforcent and subfloor to upgrading the plumbing), heat, plumbing, and a ceiling in at least one of the bedrooms before we can set up camp in there. then we'll need to finish the downstairs renovation and some of the outside work. those first two stages need to be completed within 7 months, per our fancy renovation mortgage. Once we're clear on all that, we can think about finishing the attic into the master bedroom. and stage 4, one of the main reasons we decided to buy, will be to start work in earnest on turning this place into a community farm.
holy shit!
pics? yes, scroll down!
we plan to start a blog for the renovation. I'll post the info when it happens, for anyone who wants to watch.
in other news -
I've got an EP coming out at the end of April. it will be a split with A Drop In Silence. if you've seen more than a couple of my mid-atlantic shows in the past couple of years, chances are you've seen me play with ADIS. super guys who make pounding live idm. it'll be a nice limited pressing. we will release it in style with live sets at the Friday night experimental/idm showcase at this year's Signal Electronic Music Festival in North Carolina. April 28th!
If anyone's going to be in the area, I you should come check out this two-day festival. also playing the fest are calmer, praveen, machine drum, richard chartier, i broke my robot, and many more. it's going to be a party.
okay, that's that. for now..
pics!

So after we got it, officially, the first thing we decided to do was clean up a bit so we could think! here are some shots from last night:

Of course a wood stove is going in the living room

anyway, those are some to give you an idea.
hopefully that wasn't too obnoxious of a picture post!

Congrats on becoming a homeowner!
The photos bring back memories of when we first bought our house and immediately started remodeling the entire lower level of the house. The added fun factor was 2 kids under the age of 2 - had to wash baby bottles in the upstairs tub.
So when are the windmills going up

Oh Doof! It's charming and perfect! Really! I can just see the two of you living happily there for many, many years. Wow, 7 acres! I don't know what I would do with that much land and freedom. Lovely, truly. Of course I will subscribe to your blog once you get it started.
Thanks for posting the pics and letting us all in on your good fortune!
Congratulations!

Congrats on the purchase.
Amazing location. So that's winter, eh? You're gonna disappear in the summer.
Love the elevated porch. Which way does it face?
Here's to a successful reno.

thanks for all the well-wishes!
speaking of well, there is a hand dug one on the back porch. it's amazing. probably 40 feet, straight down to water, lined with stone. pretty cool!

that is the north side of the house. but you've got a nice view east from it as well. the deck needs some work. and, the main electric service line attaches to the house right there, literally at an arm's reach. it's super dangerous! we plan to have it buried by the electric company, which means we have to dig the ditch. renting a ride-on ditch digger, can't wait! though, I'm afraid that since half the house seems to be built on ledge, going three feet down is going to be tough, if not impossible.
Mike - next time you're passing through Virginia and have a little time to spare, let me know. promise not to put you to work ;)
The blog is coming along...we wanted to catch up on postings so that we can post the project chronologically. Hopefully it will go live this afternoon, I'll let ya's know!

I'm so happy for you two. That place is great - and so much land to chill on!
Should we expect some power tools getting mixed into your tracks soon?
That well might produce some interesting reverbs - maybe dangle a mic down into it and record some things like percussive sounds. Or maybe in reverse, put a small speaker down there, trigger sounds and record from the top of the well.
Congrats John - and thanks for sharing the photos.

looks like I'm going to be constantly busy over there for a while now, but we definitely plan to keep the blog updated.
leaving work in a few minutes and we're heading off to the Habitat Store (habitat for humanity has a store of salvaged stuff here)...

Doof - I was thinking about that very thing a while back, but alas my son has dropped out of RMC and I won't be traveling to Virginia anytime soon
Back during my farm days - we had an old silo on the farm and we sometimes would record in it. Never got around to wiring it as a reverb chamber.

Hmmm... that south facing roof would be a perfect spot for solar panels.
And if yur gonna go organic, why not drop off the grid and install one of deeze...

Or are you too protected from the wind round there?
On a related note....
A house I lived in as a kid had a well in the basement that went down pretty far. Had an awesome echo to it. We used to yell and shout down that thing just to hear our voices amplified back to us. Fun times....

Community garden!!
I'll have to mail some sunflowers o'er there.
I love community gardens; they're a lot of fun when you get a whole lot of people visiting and teaching how to grow excellent plants. I would've done it back home if I lived near enough people anyhow...
Hey congrats- and yes, a speaker down a well would be a fantastic project until you accidentally dip into the ground water-- A square wave oscillator... dipped into water...
oooooh... It'd prolly sound like a sinking battle-cruiser on full alarm. (And that's where the imagination takes a detour.)

bookmarked, Steve, thanks!
cheers Ludo
Lou - ya'll are welcome here anytime of course. I think about my visit in San Diego with you and Gideon often and really look forward to doing some cooking, eating, and relaxing with ya's again!
Kylo - that would be awesome (the sunflower seeds). what a cool idea to have people sending a few seeds from here and there, like a little remote gathering or representation

I was just thinking the same thing: asking AS peeps to mail local (or favorite) seeds to you. In a sense, we could all be there.
Great idea!

I mentioned the same thing to Erika yesterday when we got to the house and she called me a "damned hippie!"
though, we're always calling eachother out on that.
It is really a great idea, let's do it!

What? A little bit of chicken shit in an envelope never hurts to start off germination.
(I am totally joking doof) lol If it makes you feel any better, I'm living up in Vancouver burbs now- so no access to 'da dung' for a while.
Awesome project!
(I can hear everyone from all directions saying "He does too have access to dung!")
Come on guys, very thin lines are being crossed here.
