Recommendulate me a book!
Created on: 10/09/06 06:11 PM Replies: 4

I've been trying to read up about transfinite numbers and other math-related topics but I usually end up getting confused by long streams of math notation.

So could any kind soul out there recommend a good book for getting acquainted with math notation and how maths theories are presented and formulated? Sort of like a "dummies guide to maths notation" or something? Confused

I'd really appreciate that since it seems hard to search for something like that on, say, Amazon.

I'm not sure what you mean by math notation, but over the years I've collected old algebra, gemoetry, and trig text books to use as reference. I believe the publisher is "Holt." you can find 'em cheap (I got mine for free).

For instance, this, and this.

Sure they were published in 1982, but has algebra changed much since then?

Plus, these are the books I used in grade school, so there's that nostalgic factor. and there's usually some childrens' handwriting in there. and awesome "computer applications" that are a trip to read.

It's just sad that I forgot so much of what was taught to me. I think I was sketching in my notebooks most of the time.

I hate math. Which is funny 'cause math is a big part of my job. I have to balance the cheque runs at work every night. Several thousand cheques get printed and the numbers have to match up and balance or else I'm in a lot of explaining to do. Rolling Eyes

I found my old highschool maths book and that seems to have most of what I need in it. There were even some pieces of paper with my handwriting and doodles on it (lots of stickman fun). That was kinda freaky because I'm miles away from where I was then.
