Hi all!
Has anybody over here some experience with making (music)videos? I'd like to learn a bit more of it myself.... Right now I'm fiddling with demoversions of ArkaosVJ....it's fun!
So....I'm interested in reading your stories....what software do you use, or do you use hardware only?
Let me/us know!!!

well, ive experimented with this a little using sony vegas. that & adobe audition appear to be the most recommended video editing apps. There is also a few "VJ" type programs out there but i never got into that. Anyways, here is a few examples..
this was something i did arranging clips from a movie to one of my songs, trying to fit it rythmically to the music. have you ever seen 'screamers'?
And this is something i just started on recently, someone elses' song. nathan rain - infection. I made this using random creative commons footage & a white blank image for the flash thing...

Thanx Hellscion....the first video looks great! The 2nd also, but it's a little short (but promising)...but both videos are more ore less the kind of things I want to do.... Most importantly is syncing the video to the music and make the images fit the music......I'm not looking for a real story, the music comes first and the images have to support the sounds.
I'll check Adobe and Sony......and I'm very interested in Public Domain footage.....where do you get it from and how do you know if/how yoou can use it legally for your productions?
Greetings, Roland

Well, sony vegas is really easy for me to use because it is almost exactly like my music editing software.. just for video. As for finding media you can use.. search for 'creative commons' license or public domain material in a search engine. if you plan on selling something you might need to clear footage but i believe the copyright laws dont extend past like 40 years or something. Art kinda grows from a soil of previous works.. Actually check out this comic thing, it goes into depth explaining the copyright issues & creative commons license.. very helpful & should clear up any confusion you might have on that subject.

Yep, did that, but sometimes it's still hard to say if it's legal or not.... But...on the other hand....footage is not the most important thing right now.... I'm gonna check Sony & Adobe right now....thanx!

I made a clip for my latest uploaded track, uploaded it to YouTube, but wasn't very happy with the quality....have to do it all over again...(the rendering, I mean).
EDIT>>> and decided to delete it........

the best video format ive found in general seems to be wmv. AVI is probably the best when you get down to it (not 100% sure about that one) but it's also uncompressed & generates extremely large file sizes. Kinda like the difference between mp3 & wav...

wmv? OK, the demo-software can render to wmv....max. filesize for uploading to YouTube is 1GB, so I'll have to keep an eye on that....

BTW: I uploaded the vid to YT and it looked not so bad....but after uploading it, the quality was a lot worse. So somehow it gets processed by YT, making the quality worse...apparently the system likes some formats more than other. I did a bit of surfing and found some handy tips on YT itself about compressing, codecs, framerates, etc. etc. etc. At the moment I'm rendering to QT, so the movie will be ready for uploading in a while.....stay tuned!

Well, here it is...it took me hours to upload this 950MB(!)-file, and still the quality sucks.... The original is OK though...so what happened.....I think it's because you can upload a vid only once...even if you first delete the original, the system recognizes the 2nd version.....and uses the first again(?)

I used IMovie and lots of photos.
Also recently I used Flash to spleen a picture and move it - it gives an idea of animation.

No not at all - think you've been misinformed there. Obviously you cant get things as tight as final cut for example - but as far as everything else goes its pretty good!
You have to do things as you go though. Thats possibly a draw-back.
Its Flash that is impossible to sync properly - especially when you are streaming the vid in too.
I'm actually going to try a combination of both this weekend - using flash and imovie.

Hmm i'm just now seeing this. Not bad man. About the quality issues.. youtube compresses the audio & video after you upload. That is what it is doing when it says "processing" & you're waiting for it to work. So in the future.. keep a higher quality version for the future when you can put it on a better medium, and for youtube try to render something close to what youtube uses already.
Actually come to think of it.. there is youtube HD now. That might also be something to look into...

Thanks! Yeah, I think YT does compress an upload...but I see movies with a better quality than mine... I am working on another vid which I'll probably finish today....using ArkaosVJ & Windows MovieMaker and making it into a WMV-file....maybe this will do the trick....
About HD: this feature is only available for the USA right now....

>>Yeah, I think YT does compress an upload...but I see movies with a better quality than mine...
you would think there would be a page on YouTube with a listing of the 'best' specs (dimensions, codecs, formats, etc.) for the best YouTube output.
It takes some time, buy you'll just need to crawl Google for a few days, looking over people's discussions on the topics and watching their samples.
some tips:
1. render your video in the final dimensions that YouTube uses - this will allow more of the file size to be dedicated to rendering a better quality rather than a larger size video.
2. consider mono sound instead of stereo - again, this frees up the file size limits so you can use that space for better video quality (meaning... less compression)
3. be sure the audio is compressed
4. extra frames on the video will bulk the file up, and You Tube will down sample the video, reducing it to what they currently stream at (sorry i don't know the specs)
===== Before they raised the file size limit to 1gb, these were the recommended specs:
MPEG 4 (DivX, Xvid) 320 x 240 frame size MP3 audio 30 fps
Google should release an app that compresses at the ideal settings and has a direct upload feature to YouTube. I would think it would optimize their whole platform since they would be offloading processing power onto the users.
Good luck - I know it can be frustrating - video is a headache... all the codes, dimensions, FPS, formats, players... it's a mess.

Yep, video can be frustrating, especially when it's meant for uploading...... Anyway, I'll keep your advice in mind....
